  • Need some Camshaft Information!

    Hi guys,

I'm now trying to build up a twin Turbo set up that's gonna get me to around 415-430whp but reliable everyday. I just bought myself two HKS GT-SS Turbos and I'm now looking for a set of cams...

The problem is, I don't know wich one to choose. There is so much things I really don't know about. My goal is to have low rpm boost (less lag as possible). I'm now looking at Tomei cams, or HKS cams. Each brand has some 260 degres, 257 degres, 9.0 mm , 8.7 mm, I'm a bit lost in all that... If anyone could help I would be really happy.

What would you suggest me ?

Thank you very much, and have a nice day !

    Maxime

Cams are not guessed, they are choosen based on the info you or engine builder provides to cam manufacturer -

You can provide info, pay them a small fee and they can tell you exactly what to run to suit your car (or custom make them for you).

But cams like Tomei Poncams are designed to work with stock head + bolt on turbo's (stock, N1, etc), etc. Also Poncams make the valvetrain reliable as it can be and might sacrifice hp in doing so. But the Procams are more aggressive, suited to competition use and require more mods to head, provide more hp over Poncams.

But going by GTSS turbo's that are close to stock turbo size, using stock valves, ports, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, etc, Type A Poncams would work -

Thanks For The Info, I also went and check a bit on the internet. People are saying to go with less then 8.9mm lift because if you go over that, it's gonna hit in the engine's head. So then if I install the Poncams I would need to modify the head, and that's something I would try to avoid.

I Found the HKS cams, Inlet 264 degrees, Lift 8.7mm. I'm trying to find some infos about them, but I think it would maybe be the best bet..

      what do you think ?

You're welcome. As far as I know, can run up to 10.25mm lift (Tomei Procams) without lobes fouling head. Poncams are designed to work with stock valve springs, stock ports, stock valves, stock head, stock camgears.

Selecting cams to match setup can be the difference between a fast car, slow car. Best to let the pro's do it for you, as have the equipment, knowledge. Or select cams based on their recommendation that work with similar size turbo's (Tomei Type A Poncams as an example).

Cams won't really get you very much, if you find a smokin deal on a set then sure. Unless you plan on changing the springs while you are in there then its a little pointless changing the cams. By now the stock springs are way beyond their service life and should be changed before the cams....but while you are in there, change the cams too......follow me?

I have the HKS itybity 264s in my motor and they work well, my spool is way better than you would think with a T88 and I believe the little cams are part of that reason. On the big end I'm pumping out over 800hp so small cams don't really hold you back much.

I do understand, so the idea of the HKS was good, then, what springs would you suggest while being there ?

            Thanks again
