  • Need some help. BNR32 No boost, blue smoke...

    Hello everyone,

I'm having some issues related to boost on my 1992 GTR. I've tried searching around for answers, but none of them seem to nail exactly what I'm experiencing, so here it goes:

I was out at my local track doing a lapping session, came out of the exit of a hairpin, and immediately had no boost. So I came into the pits, blue smoke coming out the back, and the car has a hard time maintaining an idle unless you gently bring the throttle down. One thing to note, is that I can hear the turbos spooling when I apply the throttle.

I noticed that my intercooler was leaking from a tiny hole in the bottom centre of the core (found it using soapy water), so I bought a new intercooler, but the problem still remains. I've checked all the couplers, and everything intercooler-related. But now, I'm thinking it could be a gasket issue? I will admit, I don't know a lot about symptoms of different part failures, so any advice, help, or food for thought would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Nolan

Check that the ceramic exhaust wheels are still there on turbo's (remove front half of exhaust, outlet / dumppipes that bolt onto back of turbo's). If exhaust wheels are not there engine, would have no boost (run like a NA engine). On racetrack you are meant to run N1 turbo's with steel exhaust wheels.

The blue smoke could be oil leaking from back of turbo (blown oilseal)and into hot exhaust, but that's usually a big white cloud out of exhaust that tells you that has happend. Blue smoke could mean valve seals have failed or engine has internal problems (rings). Do a compression test, leak down test (tells you if it's valves, rings that are leaking) to rule out rings, valves.
