  • Switched oil brands now turbo seals leak?

Anyone had an experience like this?
I have regularly ran royal purple xrp and never had an issue.
Changed it over for Motul 300v yesterday.
Warmed up as usual. About ten minutes into a very soft drive and im pluming smoke out the pipe.
Tore down the turbo piping and both front and back turbos where getting wet.
No shaft play, hks turbos with almost no km...
If its not the oil i cant explain how seals on both turbos failed simultaneously.
Im going to change back tmrw to old faithful.

Can get higher oil pressure with thicker oil. Look at the W?? rating. Higher the W?? rating the thicker the oil is at same oil temp. Factory is 7.5w30 or basically 5w30 or 10w30 off the shelf at the store (factory oil pressure is measured at 85 degrees C). Once excede 100 degreec C with oil temps a W40 oil is used which should be good up to around 120 degrees C. After that switch to W50 oil which is what most use on racetrack when oiltemps get higher. Also should change to Nismo oil filter with thicker than stock oils.

      Thanks Skym.
I do understand the principals behind oil weights vs temp quite well but it is the make up of the oil witch i think is causing it to bypass the seals. Both the oils are a 10w40 but my guess is the detergents in the motul are able to find there way through the seals in some way.
I have checked for excessive crank case pressure but there is none. Oil drains are kink free and return just fine.
It was night and day. Last week car ran smoke free on the xrp. First 5 minutes into using the motul and oil was purging the seals?

I also may be experiencing similar issues. My -7's have less than 10k. 3k on a stock motor ran with 10-40 rp, no issues. 3k on a freshly built motor and head. Ran my break in on a regular castrol 10-30, changing oil/filter every 500km with no issues. Come dyno day i had put the motul 5-40 in and we tuned it to 18psi. Noticed a bit more smoke than usual on the dyno but thought nothing of it (more fuel for extra boost etc.).

Next day and everytime i start the car after leaving it for say 12 hours it will puff a cloud of blue on start up. Now my old r33 n1 turbos used to do this after an hour of shut down on a tired motor, and smoke for like 3-5 mins after a full night of sitting. When pulled the compressor was soaked in oil. New ones on that motor never smoked, but now they do on a built motor and head. First Thought was valve seals but i have a 1.5mm head restrictor and supertech valve seals. Turbos have a 1mm restrictor in the feed line. So the point im at is if my valve seals are no good im gonna rage and if my turbo seals are cooked im pretty much done with garrett bb turbos as seals can not be replaced. My cars off the road so i cant try switching oils but this never occured to me so please tell us what you find!

Your experiences make me wonder about the coincidence that the RP I ran on track clogged my oil pressure sender. Some oils like to varnish. And Motul is a pretty high end formulation, especially the 300V.

Where I'm getting at is the old debate about old engines varnished with organic based motor oil getting flushed and leaking with quality synth. Seems like RP, to me, is like the former while Motul is like the latter.

Strange. . .backwards for me. . .ran Castrol and my front seal was leaking pretty bad, switched to Motul and has been fine since then. . .55,000km's on it since the switch with no issues. . .

Well results are in. I couldnt find 10w40 xpr in stock so i picked up some 5w30 xpr. Started it up and not a single drop came through the seals on warm up. Taking it for a shakedown tonight. Let you know if things change but so far it seems the motul 300v was causing the problem..
