  • AMS Max-Slot brakes making terrible squeaking noise

I have AMS max slot rotors rotors and their ceramic pads on my stock calipers.

The car has been sitting for a bit, and when i put it back on the road there was no squeaking noise

The squeaking noise has come back and been getting worse

I think it may have started when i hit a pothole at speed around when i first had them installed.

Any suggestions? it's been a huge cockblock this summer

I have only driven on them for 2000 km

Check for small rock in caliper or inbetween pad, rotor (does happen) or inbetween stone shield behind rotor, rotor.

If not that, check brake hoses, as one wheel could be braking more than the other causing the brake squeal (rock can hit brake hose, check brake resouvoir level). Sometimes the brake hoses fail internally, so no visable signs on outside. Brake hoses should be changed every 4 years or so. If you do a brake test (some places have a brake dyno), should notice one wheel braking more than the other.

Also make sure you have bed the brakes in properly for 300km, and they have cleaned the faces of discs before install.

Brake pads can move around. There's anti squeal shims you can put on back of brake pads to prevent this.

Sometimes it's compound of brake pads (changing brake pads, bedding in might work).

Something tells me they didn't clean the rotors when they first installed them, they still looked kind of greasy when they were installed. is there any way to remedy this ?

There's a protective coating they apply to surfaces (to stop rotor surfaces rusting during shipping and while sitting around on store shelf) that needs to be cleaned off. Just use brake cleaner, rag and remove it. Keep the brake cleaner away from painted middle, as it can remove the paint as well, if it's the spray can type of paint they applied to centre of rotor (cheaper one piece rotors).

Not sure if any would have got on brake pads. Might need to lightly sand (with a sanding block to keep it flat) or skim the surface of brake pads to roughen them up again.

Worse case is rotors might need to be lightly skimmed by one of those portable brake machining companies.

Yea, if those bozos were too lazy to clean off the packing anti rust coating then the pads and rotors are glazed. All you need to do is take everything apart and dress both the pads and rotors. By dressing I mean, sand the pads on a block by glueing some 80 grit to a nice flat board and running the pads over them untill the material looks virgin again.

The rotors will need a bit more aggressive approach. You need to use a angle grinder with a flapper disk and take off all the glaze, again 80 grit will do. If you have no tools at all then the rotors will have to be cut, have them just take off enough to true and clean the surface, nothing more, make sure you really emphisize that or those idiots at the brake shop will carve a crap load out of the rotors just to shorten the life of them so you have to come back sooner.....it happens a lot.

Yeah my redneck buddy said they sounded like they were glazed too.

In the shops defense they did give me an easy time for the vehicle inspection.

Have to same front pads and rotors and they do pretty much the same, if you get them real hot then i dont notice the noise. I did clean any residue from the rotors before install so i'd be surprised if it was that. Also i did do a proper bed in procedure to get the pad material onto the rotor. Im thinking its just the nature of the pads being carbon ceramic. When they are not up to temp they are loud and don't bite as hard, but once warm, its almost hard to keep them from locking up.

I have yet to try and put some anti squeal on the back of the pads to see if it works.
I have also heard from a couple other people with the pads having noise issues as well.

good luck and let us know if you do find a cure.

If you don't want squeeling to come back you can chamfer a 45deg edge on the edges of the pads with sand paper, the deeper the longer it lasts. Then sand the rotor surface lightly. We do this for any squealing brake noise from an a3 to r8 at my work. (Audi) when reassembling you can coat the pad backing contact points with anti squeal paste
