Keep the N1s, get a better bar and plate intercooler (stock flows well but doesn't cool worth a Damn), Crower mid range cams with gears and any ECU that has either MAP or a combo of MAP and MAF. Tuning is everything. Good fuel is everything. 94 octane and a tuner with some balls and you will be tickling 500whp and an ass-load of mid range. All in, about $2500 cheaper than V-Cam.

Depends what you want for power and purpose
My rb25 s1 has VCT hich has 3 settings, low.mid and high. The cam angle adjustments are nowhere near as much as the hks but same idea

If don't want to change turbo's, can gain more down low with increase in capacity (RB30 or RB34). RB30 has a similar shape power band as a RB26, but more hp, torque throughout powerband and increases response (transient response, boost response), reduces lag. If have a high hp RB engine with big turbo's, intercoolers it's a must have mod to reduce lag.
Other way with RB26 is fitting VCT, which depending on how it's set, can give more hp, torque down low, but similar peak hp to RB28 or RB30. Probably can fit a RB25DET VCT setup (add a oil feed to VCT, etc), which is what I gather the HKS Vcam is based off and run a Tomei or similar solid lifter RB25DET VCT cam (can order cams to your specs) and run a ViPEC, Link, Motec, etc ECU that can control VCT. Basically build your own VCT kit.
Turbo size, exhaust A/R on turbo play a role in response, so does cams, cam timing with increase in boost response (creates more exhaust gas at lower rpm which helps to spool turbo quicker).
Changes in cam timing can make turbo spool 300-400rpm earlier (if set correctly).
Here's an example with stock cams, camtiming changes (adjustable cam gears) on RB20DET and note the increase in boost response, increase in hp throughout powerband (there's also increase in torque which is not shown) -
