  • AC Problem

So tonight I installed a new AC belt on my 1991 GTR, was told everything worked perfectly fine, nothing wrong with it. Well after I got the belt installed and tightened down, I turned the car on and heard squealing when the AC was on. At first I thought it was the belt but it only happened when I turn on the AC. Does anyone have any ideas why it would be doing this? My friend thinks it needs a recharge.

If it wasnt working before you put the belt on, chances are the compressor is on its way out or done. The clutch that engages and disengages the compressor may be hooped or the whole pump is gone.

This is all assuming you properly tensioned the belt, its possible the belt is squeeling from the extra load and not being tight enough.

The car didnt have the AC belt installed when I purchased the car. I was told everything was in perfect working order. I checked tension on the belt and it's tight. Ill double check to make sure this evening

A seized compressor could be the culprit if your belt tension is good.

prior installing the belt you should spin the compressor by hand to see if it spins freely

So today I went to put the window defroster on, but that also turns the ac on. Well when that happened it almost stalled the car when I was doing 80. Going to take the belt off... Pump is dickered I'm thinking

The aircon pump requires oil and most don't service aircon (replace the oil, gas each year). The aircon pump has multiple pistons inside that run off a central plate (central plate oscillates which makes each piston go up and down) and off that central plate and just under pistons (central plate, pistons are connected by little arms / conrods) are balljoints that seize and make the aircon pump produce a knocking sound (due to lack of oil or old oil). Usually replace that piston part (can get from another model Nissan aircon pump, as you can't fix the balljoints) if those balljoints are seized due to lack of oil or old oil. Also there are seals that you replace and bearings that need replacing or lubing during a rebuild.

On the front is a magnet and the aircon headunit turns that magnet on and off (not constantly on) to drive and not drive the pistons inside aircon pump. You can unplug the magnet (don't have to remove the belt).

You're welcome. Get aircon specialist (some have a mobile service) to degass the aircon system before you do. It's illegal in most countries to release the old aircon gas into atmosphere and can get a big fine, etc.
