I'm definitely curious on how you will control the actuator, kindda iffy to mount stuff over more stuff to make it work. would a boost controller work as to control it ? Thing is, once the actuator is fully open, you are stiil boosting x-PSI, where does that extra boost go if you don't want it ??

i doubt it would hit boost as early as 2500 either, I just dont want a big single that hits peak boost at 4000+rpm, I did some math, with the difference in A/R, at fully closed position, the corresponding area inside the turbine housing is about 2/3 the area of a single stock rb26 turbo, but you also have to take into account the bigger compressor and turbine wheel which is heavier and slower to spool. all in all i dont know what will happen running this on a rb26 but heres a link of a dude running this turbo on a 1jz, its the closest comparison i can find

I think if executed properly this is a better route than the QSV that many people go with. However to truly take advantage of the VGT, one would need to take into account TPS and EGT as well. I believe the electric actuator that Holset supplies uses CANbus but not sure how that would interface with an aftermarket ECU. Some extensive programming would be required.

But if you want to use new turbo technology, wait a little while for the new multi/dual boost (dual compressor) turbos from Garrett. Sounds crazy. The air in compressed twice so bigger boost faster. Vgt EFR has nothing on this if they do release.
Funny story, quite a few diesels come out with VGT turbos but most of the owners UPGRADE to gtx, precision a or EFR for more simplicity as the extra fluster cluck of stuff to run the vgt grants negligible gains when compared to other newer turbos...No build thread.

I think the diesel guys upgrade from the VGT because of reliability issues as well as the simple fact that this turbo is not considered big for their 6-7 liter diesels. In terms of reliability, because of all the soot buildup in the turbine housing, it eventually clogs the vanes and they get stuck open or closed. I dont think they upgrade because of complexities in the setup of the system, mostly because they want a more reliable setup with more power from a bigger turbo. For gas engines however, carbon buildup is not as severe as diesels so many people running this turbo on gas engines dont seem to have this problem
I think the dual boost turbo setup would be pretty cool but I think the diesel guys are doing something similar already, I think its called a compound turbo setup where they use a small turbo to spool a bigger one but it requires INSANE fab work
This is turning out to be a lot of work however, but considering I'm paying $250 for a practically new VGT turbo, I don't think I have much to lose. I'm just a student so I dont have the funds to do a balls to the wall all out single turbo setup with baller status EFR or GTX. If I can just put a little effort in making this work, and it turns out to be even close to the response of a EFR or GTX Ill be happy

Makes sense. Sounds interesting non the less but it seems like a lot of work since I don't think anyone has ever done it before. The dual boost turbo isn't literally 2 turbos, from what I've learned, its 1 turbo with 2 compressor wheels/housings (longer shaft). Could be wrong but sounds nuts. Kinda like a turbine engine I guess?
$250 is indeed cheap if you're not calculating the hours of labour, extra custom parts and R&D failures (should it frag an engine)
Then again I'm kind of in the same boat with my crazy turbo kit that has had more failures that success bus far... When I ordered, there was only 2 other persons in the world running it as a prototype for testing which one went through 8 turbos.....

sorry guys no big updates, just been looking around for a welder to do some custom work but no luck, plus taking 6 courses and trying to graduate doesn't help either
Also, looks like someone has done this on a rb25, looks pretty cool
