  • R32 GTR 4WD problem

Hi guys, I recently picked up another R32 GTR and I'm getting code 18 on the computer in the trunk just under the speakers. Code 18 being "ETS PRESSURE SWITCH or CIRCUIT" anyone have any idea what part that is relating to? The previous owner had gotten a HICAS lockout bar and said he did something with the Power steering pump by having something welded, I can't recall so don't quote me on it. If anyone has ran into this problem, could you maybe give me advice or an idea where the culprit is? I should be getting a pretty crummy snowfall soon so I'd like the AWD to be working. Thanks GTRC (:

HICAS is a separate system (steering).

Sounds like a fault in the wiring from 4wd ECU to ETS pump (4wd ECU unplugged, wiring falling out of 4wd ECU plug that goes to ETS pump, 4wd ECU itself, 4wd fuse under dash on drivers side has blown or been removed). ETS pump changes the pressure to transfer case. I think was more pressure from ETS pump to transfer case = more 4wd.

Look at this to understand how the 4wd works on a R32 GTR, as it shows the location of the ETS pump that I'm talking about and how it's connected to the transfer case, 4wd ECU -

4wd / ABS? ECU is located under rear parcel tray on passenger side on R32 GTR. HICAS ECU is located on drivers side in same location.

Just bleed your ETS system, most likely the cause if the connectors are all ok.

Ahows you how to do that in the FSM

          Hey thanks for your reply.

I had checked all the fuses and they're all okay. the connections into the 4wd ecu also look fine, I haven't checked any further than that. I had also noticed I didn't have a rear reservoir in the trunk for the power steering fluid, and I'm curious if that has any part in the 4wd? I guess I'll have to get my car on a lift to check out that ETS pump though.

Awesome, I will give it a shot when I get the chance at work. Thanks for your input!

                ...

You DO have a driver-side reservoir in the trunk, though, right? Because HICAS is fed from the engine bay, the PS reservoir. The reservoir in the trunk is for the ETS (filled with ATF fluid).

Check the air bubble height between the intake and the outake pipes (a clear gap in the fluid which should be around 1cm thick IIRC?) and colour of the reservoir's fluid (if you do have it, which yes, would be a critical part of the circuit).

You're welcome. The 4wd has it's own resouvoir behind the trunk / boot trim (as mentioned above, filled with ATF fluid, but not sure what Dexron they used back when car was made, might have been Dexron III).

You can replace ETS pump, 4wd ECU with a pump action handle (like they do on GTR dragcars). I think it was Veilside that sold this handle. Some custom make their own version of this handle for dragcars.

Wait a sec. You have 2 20 year old GTRs and don't know about the reservoir?

lol the previous owner who did the rear HICAS lockout snipped all the lines to the ETS pump and crimped the lines from the front ps pump to the rear rack? but no this one doesn't have the rear reservoir.

So you need new lines and reservoir at the least. Highly likely you will need a new pump too if that's been running for any length of time with no oil through it!

I think the new pump will be needed then, haha it's been RWD with the previous owner for half a year at least LOL.
