  • Smoking after spitting ceramic exhaust wheel

I have an 89 gtr that had the rb26 rebuilt 6000 miles ago by a previous owner. I have all documentation. It has cp pistons, Manley rods, ACL bearings, lower end balanced, new valve guides, head ported. 400 km ago I was doing a hard pull at 13 psi and it felt great, I let off and went to throttle again and no power, no boost what so ever. Limped it 20 miles home and as expected, it spit the wheel on the front turbo. Replaced turbos with 06u00 nismo units. Ran car, was getting blue smoke badly. Cleaned all the oil out of intercooler and bov piping and seemed to be better, but as soon as it gets up to operating temp if I decel for a distance coming to a stop then idle, as soon as I give it throttle to move it blows a cloud of blue oil smoke. A lot of blue not a little. Doesn't seem to blow near as much under boost as when not under boost , but can't see it as well under power. No oil in intake pipework now , I pulled downpipe and no wet oil in either outlet so that rules out the turbos. I pulled the plugs and don't see any wet oil deposits on any of them, but if I look down the plug holes the top of all the pistons are wet. I have to wait till tommorow to get my leak down and compression testers from work so I don't have those numbers yet. I do notice a little oil in the coolant also, so I'm sure the cometic head gasket that was put in during the rebuild is junk like everything I have read. I have a feeling I will be pulling the engine to inspect for the cause, but just wanted to throw this information out there too get any ideas from those of you who have more experience than I do with rb motors. I wouldn't think valve seals as the motor is so fresh, but being I wasn't the one that did the work I can't rule anything out.

    Head gasket.

The seal around cylinder is quite thin on those head gaskets, so the deck of head, deck of block has to be perfectly flat. I would have used a Cosworth or ACL headgasket, if want to use a head gasket that's made outside Japan and has a thicker seal. Tomei, HKS are the other options in Japan.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking of going with tomei as I have heard it is the best, but I have also heard very good things about the cosworth gasket. Regardless I am going to pull the motor. I'm just confused as to the smoke since the turbo spit the wheel. I'm just hoping no scored cylinders or piston damage. But I won't know that till tommorow when I do compression and leakdown. Maybe the head gasket just let go all the way. No coolant in oil just some oil in coolant and no signs of overheating or white smoke, just blue smoke that smells of oil

Why would anyone who's already put that much money into the engine cheap out on a cometic gasket?

My thoughts exactly, but I didn't build it, neither did the person I bought it from. The person in bc that imported it did. I am going to do compression and leakdown today. I also borrowed the boroscope from work too look for damage before I have the enjoyment of tearing it out if the car. The only positive is that when I tear it down, I will know exactly what's in there and how it was done.

Well, no need for leakdown. Boroscope told the sad story. Bad scores and nicks in 2, some scoring in 1. Compression readings cold 123 90 130 130 130 130. Sadly it injested the wheel instead of pitching it out the exhaust. Time to pull it and see if anything is salvageable

Must have done it when backing off throttle.

I guess, I heard no noise, I actually let off cause I was coming up into traffic and when I went to accelerate again nothing. Oh well. Just my luck
