    Hey guys,

We all know that Apexi's super suction kits are the best. But what about other filters? Are foam filters that bad!? The kits I have in mind are HKS mushrooms, Blitz SUS, K&N, Airinx... What you guys think? Whats your experience with them?

My engine came with k&n on it and sound okay(though I'm not a huge fan of the noise, I'd like to hear stock airbox or arc). Nothing bad to say about K&N other than preference.

The mushroom filters have a bad rep cause hks use to(and possibly still does?) had bad foam filters that would get hard and brittle and deteriorate as they got older, which then got sucked on by turbos and shot into the engine which is not cool for the turbos, your intercooler, or the engine. I believe they're better now.

I had the hks pods and an arc box before finally getting apexi. The arc box is nice to look at but that's about it. The filter elements wouldn't seat properly and there was a drain hole on the bottom which allowed sand and dirt to get sucked into my turbos. My mafs did not like it at all.

This is good to know, maybe I'll have to have interest in stock airbox. I don't really like the induction noise, though my dad thinks its awesome. To bad stock box makes the engine bay look so messy =\

I've mostly had the HKS pods, or at least that style filter over the years. Never had a problem.
If they have the chance to get hard, brittle, or whatever and deteriorate, they're being left WAAAY too long between changes imo.
The elements are cheap enough to change more than often enough.

interesting, but i don't think they'll fit with the greddy suction pipe kit i have... Might have not enough room between the MAFs and the fender/bay inner side... I'm gonna measure the room i have left and let you know buddy..!

You want a dry type airfilter with MAF's and bolt on type (if clamp on type the intake clamp comes loose and causes stock ECU to hit the boost cut earlier than it should). Wet type of air filter puts oil on the MAF hotwire, IAT sensor next to it.

Worked out the stock airbox filter has 2x the area than one of those podfilters and is shielded from heat when the hood is down. You'll see hp gains with the hood up, but hood down usually results in lower hp ouput with podfilters.

If after the perfect fit, you would do the calculations to determine the correct size airfilter for the boost level, turbo, etc.

If you look at airfilter manufacturers they provide airfilters in many sizes, based on your requirements (calculations).

For lowest maintenance, dry filters is the way to go over the oil type. I have and still use both types over the years, currently using the HKS 3 layer dry filter on the R34. As previously stated, don't leave them in too long, change out at every second oil change or so.
                  Cheers...
