  • Front Diff Pre-load

    Alright even though i dont post much on GTRC which hense i use this search button more often then making a new thread, but this issue of mine has gotten me a headache of trying to find this proper spec for my R33 GTR. The proper pre-load of the pinion bearings and front diff itself with the torque of the prop shaft nut.

    The engine manual nor the fast manual has nothing on this spec. Googling for a couple days on and off have only lead me with one possible conclusion which was said back in 2007. This is it;

Something doesn't sound normal there. Did you use a torque gauge to set the brg drag on the pinion? If you know what to feel for you can do it by feel but with new brgings you really should use a torque gauge. New brging need to be set a little tighter than used to compensate for run-in.

    I'll check the bible .....

    I see what you did, the spacer shim (closest to the pinion gear) has a bevel cut into one side for clearance of the fillet that is cut into the pinion so there is a smooth transition from the shaft to the gear. I see that Nissan uses a solid sleeve and a shim to keep the brgings spaced apart (kinda goofy and really labour intensive for no reason) and that the preload is set to .5-.7 ft-lb (.07-.10 kg-m) front and .7-1.2 ft-lb (.10-.16 kg-m) rear. That is without the oil seal in place and measured as you rotate the pinion (need a digital torque gauge or a very sensitive bar bendy style).

    I guess they had their reasons (it would keep the pinion very stable under alot of stress, like HD trucks) but a spring sleeve is MUCH easier to deal with than a solid sleeve and a shim. I can see why shops charge an arm and a leg to install this stuff. New gears and LSD would be a hair pulling session and a crap load of shims to instal from scratch.

    Jon.

    So in the second paragraph .5 to .7 Ft lbs for the front diff pinion shaft bearings. If anyone has re-built their front diff can you give me a hand for what pre-load you put on? I have brand new bearings with my new NISMO LSD diff. Or if anyone has any other kind of info will be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    .5 to 1.0 ft/lbs without oil seal in place with a very light coat of oil using a digital torque gauge.

      Holy Shnykies man, that is a blast from the past. I see in your list you don't have the Bible (Nissan Shop Manual from Aus.) downloaded. Do that ASAP, it has about 400 pages in it and is where I get most of my info from. Most R33 items will be the same save for the Active Rear Diff and the preload on the transfer case...among other small things I'm sure.
