  • Taping coils to fix misfire, made it alot worse...?

Hey guys. I have a misfire problem and have tried cleaning the coil packs and boots. Nothing different so I tried taping the coils and boots with electrical tape and it actually made it way worse. It misfires as soon as it builds boost now. Weird. So I'm suspecting that something else may be giving up now. Like the next weakest link in the system. Maybe spark plug gap is wrong or the wiring harness is too crispy and fried. I know I should probably replace a bunch of crap already but I'm just wondering why keeping the gap from jumping through the boots actually made it worse. I'm confused.

If you think it could be plugs that's something really cheap to replace. Ignitor is hard to test however they go bad quite regularly. If you think it's coulpacks I have a set for 50$ plus shipping

Ya I'm just going to swap parts with my buddies gtr to see what's happening. I'm going to order a new wiring harness anyways because mine is getting crunchy.

Taping a coil won't work. Also you should look at the parts you took off, the harness and the springs within each coil could have been damaged or moved out of place on removal.

Actually this does work, I've done it on my car with success. No, it isn't a permanent fix, but it definitely works! I had an elusive misfire for over a year, it had new injectors, new coil pack harness, computer, a lot replaced. Taped up my coil packs and the misfire was 100% gone. Like I said, temporary until one can afford to buy coil packs.

Ah. I'll have to look it over once more to make sure I didn't miss or break something. Must be the problem

I went throught this issue for months with mine. I tried taping the coils and using the dielectric grease, didnt work. Bought yellow jackets, still didt work. Suspected the ignitor to be causing issues, and converted to LQ9/LS2 coils cutting the ignitor out all together. Cost half as much as new coils and much better product. Dont waist ur time.

Ok found the problem. It was the coil packs. Switched mine with my friends and it ran really smooth again. Thanks for the help and advice guys.

taping just the boots never works, have to tape the boots, then seal the boots to coil body with liquid electrical tape, i coated my coils and boots completely with 5 coats of liquid electrical tape after tape wrapping the boots. no problems after that and the jar of liquid electrical tape is about 7 bucks US. the leakage spot is where the boots meet the coil body. it arcs to the coil bracket
