  • Low RPM idle and stalling - when cold or warmed up

I've been trying to find something specifically fitting my issue and after a week decided to make a new post.

Almost 3 weeks ago I had my r32 tuned. Borgwarner single with the a/c deleted, more details are on the original owner's for sale thread here:

    http://forums.gtrcanada.com/cars-sal...gle-turbo.html

I had no issues at Magnus who did the tuning. They did tell me that my engine was sweating oil so they went with 17psi making 463 and I decided to check for oil leaks before pushing it any more.

Oil change done about 1,200 before dropping it off at Magnus. Checked when I got it back, oil full to the top line still. Decided to enjoy the car and monitor daily.

On the 2nd day driving it I had a spacer completely fail in the back snapping a stud and causing some vibration. Thankfully very close to home.

At this point with the "mystery oil sweats", the damaged studs and a long overdue upper control arm install I decided to drop it off at a mechanic I have used for a long time.

A few days after I dropped it off new studs, spacers and rear upper control arms installed. Engine bay washed, no oil leaks found so they are monitoring for a day or two.

All good I think. Friday the day of the pickup comes and I get an email indicating that it keeps stalling for some reason.

Now it is the second week and no progress has been made. I was there today to check it out and when idle it just drops rpms and stalls. When I hold it at 700-800 rpm it idles smooth and warm up fine. It stalls when warm too, maybe a little bit slower vs when cold.

If I hold the clutch down when it's warm it will not stall but idle is lower than usual at ~650rpm. Normal is high-700, low-800 range.

Mechanic said nothing when he did the minor back end work which was a few days after I dropped it off. So it was still running great. As far as I know the issues started for them following the engine bay wash and checking for leaks.

Thanks very much if you have any ideas you can share.

Check that your clutch booster is not leaking from the housing or the cabin. Unhook it and plug the line.

Usually a stalling issue is air (too little or too much) or fuel related. I wouldn't suspect your ignition system given it can idle and run over low rpm but give it a look.

You might want to check with the tuner to ask about the iacv and if they adjusted or did anything with it.

Thanks for the reply. I could not try any of your suggestions as it is still with the mechanic.

Finally today they said that the issue was too small of a gap on the spark plugs. Which sounds odd as it did a few pulls after it was re-gapped by the tuner. No issues starting it up again after a bit over an hour of a cool down while waiting at their shop for the traffic to die down.

Same goes for the few days after the tune. I drove it to and from work with no issues. Initially they had no issues with the car. I told them what it was gapped to when it was dropped off. It's really surprising to hear that this was the issue after the week of waiting.

Shop told me I can pick it up tomorrow so I will know if it is really good for sure.

I went to pick it up today and it was idling low at 600-650 when first started, but not stalling. It's a bit cold here for this time of year. Took a slow drive to let it warm up. A couple of minutes in, no problems. Back to the usual 800-820 that I am used to seeing so I went back to the shop.

The guy at the shop today told me something a bit different. He said the plugs were not gapped consistently and the engine was flooded.

Other guy I spoke to yesterday said they were gapped really small. I was aware of that as I was there when the tuner re-gapped. I told this to the guy who said they were inconsistent today back when I first dropped the car off.

The tuner is reputable and there were no issues at all for over a week after they were done with it.

This shop that just had it I have used for years now. They have done a motor swap for my impreza and years later I'm still running issue free with that car.

I have lost track of how many times they have done some major work for me without a problem. So I am not exactly questioning them on this one. At this point I am still too much of a novice to figure out what to really went on this past week.

It has really been something like 10 hours of garage time for me for every hour out so it might just have been my gtr gremlins at it again. The 2 slightly different versions of the facts have me a bit concerned though.
