  • GT2530>RB20 turbo?

is the gt2530 much better or any better than the stock rb20 turbo? i thought they were mainly to be used in pairs on gtrs, not single turbo setups. opinions?
I've been brushing my teeth with jack but it's resulted in terrible amounts of tooth decay.

not much better, but better IMHO.

They'll spool well on a single set up with the 2.0L

The benefit is steel exhaust wheel and slightly bigger turbo. Also higher boost levels can be run.

Specs of HKS 25/30 turbo -

      Translated link -

Rated at 320ps or 320 US hp.

Specs of stock RB20 turbo -

Compressor wheel 42mm entrance diameter x 59mm major diameter
      Compressor housing 0.50 A/R
Turbine wheel 51mm major diameter x 43mm exit diameter
      Exhaust housing 0.4 A/R
Roughly rated at 250 UK hp

This R32 GTS-T in Japan has a HKS 25/30 turbo, Tomei Poncams, etc and produces 363.9ps or 363.9 US hp at engine (From what I understand they supposedly take it from engine in Japan on dynocharts, not at the wheels) -

Here's the info and dyno chart on that R32 GTS-T in Japan -

      Above link translated -

HKS 25/30 produces fullboost at lower rpm's around 4000rpm with stock cams, intercooler upgrade, fuel upgrade, ECU retune, etc (similar spec to above car in Japan, but without cams). The result is 279 UK rwhp. That's roughly around 343 UK hp at engine with 15.54psi and 98 octane in Australia.

With E85 a stock RB20DET, stock RB20 turbo can produce around 290 UK rwhp at 14.7 psi. On 98 octane with similar configuration (except it has stock injectors, bigger fuelpump, adjustable FPR) with stock turbo, stock RB20DET, 268rwhp at 14.7psi.

Octane of fuel plays a big role in how much ignition timing you can run without engine knocking (unstable combustion) thus hp you can produce from engine. Higher octane fuel burns slower thus more ignition timing (rotation of crank in degrees before firing sparkplug) can be run.

like Skym said. Would be a lot stronger with the steel wheel and that means more boost ready. Stock rb20 turbo gets beaten up pretty good after like 14 psi

only good up to 320 hp though? that won't be enough when i upgrade the head

No, that's the turbo hp rating at I think is 14.7psi (from what I understand most turbo's are not efficient until 14.7psi). I think hp rating is based of the CFM of turbo at a certain psi which is taken from compressor flowchart.

For example in working out hp for turbo on a engine. A T3 60 trim compressor wheel flows 490CFM at 29.4psi max on flowchart.

            490CFM / 29.4psi = 15.66666, etc

            (say I want to run 14.7psi) 15.66666 x 14.7psi = 245hp

            245hp x 0.6 = 147hp

            147hp + 155.5hp (NA engine hp at flywheel for RB20DE) = 302.5hp at engine.

Then add ECU tune (30.1725) + Tomei Poncams (24.138hp) = 356.8105hp at engine. That's only a rough estimate, as intake airtemp from intercooler, etc play a role. But it gives you a rough idea of what hp that turbo will produce on your engine.

What's the hp goal, application for car??? Application can be racetrack, street, drag, drift, etc. Application gives you and idea you where you need the powerband to be and how much hp you need. Street, racetrack are similar setup wise.

HKS 2530 is more for response and earlier spool (3800rpm-4000rpm) which is determined by the exhaust side of turbo (A/R, exhaust wheel size). A laggy setup is 4800-5000rpm.

This is what a responsive RB engine is like -

i have a gt2530 on my rb20 and i have to say that this thing spools pretty damn fast compared to my friends rb25 turbo on rb20s or stock turbos for that matter. I have read up of some people pushing 18 pounds out of this turbo...but thats your call as to putting that much out. i run it at 15psi...well that is when my damn boost controller was working

i think i'll probably save up a bit more cash and splurge on a gt30something. thoughts?

what'd you have to do to get the 3071r to fit? or the gt35?

for the 3071r, I had to get a T25/28 inlet welded on my manifold. You'll also need to get the turbine outlet flange and a custom dump/elbow made. Oil/coolant lines are straight forward, just match fittings and go AN- or rubber.

Size wise, I have about 1/4" between the cam covers and the compressor housing.

You mean get a t2 inlet welded on your compressor housing?

manu, I'll probably sell my HKS GT2540 when I'll store the car if you want to ! It's rated around 370 ps +

so did you decide not to sell the r33? that has a t25 flange right? i'll do some looking into what i'd have to get to make it fit and let ya know
