every site i can find only lists a 80mm or higher head gasket bore. my rb20 is only a 78mm bore in the block. am i ok to use the 80mm bore? or is there somewhere i can buy the 78mm? thanks!

Headgasket squishes a bit when head is torqued down, so 80.5mm headgasket is for 78mm cylinder bore.
For example with Tomei headgasket for RB20DET -

Maybe that's why Cometic gaskets are worst than OEM ones.

The seal around cylinders is thinner with that metal headgasket. Factory seal around cylinders looks frayed in comparison to metal headgasket, but factory headgasket seal is still thicker than that metal headgasket with thinner seal.
