  • Headlight Problem

Hi All, I've searched and can't really come up with anything.

Problem seems to be my Left Headlight has stopped working (Running Light corner still works though). Now i bought the car with a HID kit installed, wiring isn't the best but it definitely worked.

For starters all fuses are good, grounds are good at headlights, HID ballasts and bulbs are perfect (swapped to working side and proved). Now i've taken a volt meter to the bulb and it draws nothing, from fuse it draws perfect.

My question is their a common spot that would pinch or splice the left wiring i can patch/ re-route or would it be easier to finally say **** it a rip the whole wiring, then re-wire from fuse myself?

    Thanks

Try turning your headlights on really quick. 50% of the time, if I dont rotate the switch at the speed of sound, my passenger headlight wont come on. Rotate it fast and it turns on. Strrrange It seems to be a somewhat common problem too

I'm not going to rule that out, but I will try it tonight.

Unfortunately i never got around to my car last night so it will have to wait until after work.

What would get rid of this fast rotation problem if that's it (assuming someone has fixed this, or knows?)

The switch is bad, very common. Sometimes you can take it apart and clean the contacts to get it to work again.

          Yea, contacts.
And only one bulb miss-firing is common on vehicles that aren't equipped with HID ballasts as standard (happened to both my 04 ford ranger and 96 impala.. Same damn issue, same type of switch)..Why i say that is because cars equipped with HID's typically have relays set up just for that reason.. What happens is the contacts in the switch loosen up/oxidize slightly and lose contact (duh). The ballast needs a constant amount of 12v to ignite the bulb, if the switch only contacts momentarily (normally enough for standard halogen bulbs to fire), the ballast wont fire, and the bulb will flicker slightly and shut off, as well, you'll hear a quick ZZZZZZ buzzing noise.. Igniter miss-firing.

Dont keep doing it, i've burnt a cheap chinese ballast this way, then had to hard wire it to a 12 v input lol.. ghettoooo..

Thanks guys, Brendan I'm gonna rip apart the switch and get to cleaning. Probably easier for me to just stop in one night.

But I know night time is dedicated drinking time for you ha-ha, How's the datsun coming, heard you SR'd it?

Haha, you make me sound like an alcoholic! Datsun has a KA sitting it it right now to fit everything. Debating just going KA instead of spending the money I don't have on the rest of the parts to finish the SR setup.

Ha-ha i suppose, i know how we can solve it though... Will you work for alcohol? and I mean specifically payed in alcohol. That's right but in all seriousness that's awesome, I can't wait to see that Datsun in action. Theirs not alot of room in that engine bay is there?

                  UPDATE.

So After working on a couple other things last night I thought it was time to screw around with the switch (as previous mentioned).

Long story short regardless how fast i switched it the LH never came on (or even showed the least bit of life).

I then thought it was appropraite to double check fuses before i pulled out the switch to clean.

The following pictures show what i mean, HORN, and RH both drew power from both sides of the fuse. And when i drew from the LH fuse it only gave me power on the lower side (refer to pic).

I'm really confused what would cause one side of the fuse to be out (possibly wiring below fusing?)

                  ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Images aren't showing up so I have them linked too.

I am also cleaning the switch as we speak at work to eliminate it being a problem.

A guy who was going to install a HID kit in my car recently told me that the problem is an hid bulb needs all the voltage from the ballast, if you have some messed up wiring that could be stopping all the ballasts power from reaching the bulb.
Im not very knowledgable when it comes to this, but thats what this guy told me. hope it helps

Having the same issue here as yupyup however on a GTR.. one side is perfectly fine, however for the left, side (lower 15A fuse), it keeps blowing the fuse all i did was change out the bulbs.. Any ideas?

i found with mine i had a ground issue and the sealed connector melted and almost started a fire..
it could be that you touched the bulb during install and fried it (you'll see fingerprints: the grease from your fingers heat up faster than the bulb) or you broke the ceramic end of the prong.
either way.. disconnect the fuse for the lights untill you find your issue..and block out some time to run a trace for a ground fault in the wires

I had the same issue when I bought my gts-t recently. Turns out it was to do with the turn signal/high beam switch, one of the wires going from it to the passenger bulb wasn't getting power. Got a new one and now both bulbs come on every time.
