Help : Which turbo to fit in Gts-t R32

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a new turbo for my Skyline Gts-t R32.
I don't want big HP, I just want to have more power for drifting.

At the moment I have the original Turbo of the RB20, with 230whp.
I don't want the RB25 turbo.
I will prefer a ballbearing turbo.
I don't want to change everything in the car to make the turbo fit in the engine bay (i.e. keep the original manifold, no external wastegate, maybe just a custom downpipe if needed.)

Earlier, I looked at the garrett gt3076r and gt3071r, but it seems that it won't fit in the engine bay.

I'm not good in mecanic, so I want to keep it simple as possible.

Hey Jonask, theres quite a few threads around here on turbo upgrades for Gtst. I was in your shoes a year ago and am currently just finishing up.

You dont have alot of options but the The HKS GT2835 is T3 flanged and rated for 430hp with the proper supporting mods. there is other options like the "disco potato" of mazda speed 3s. There is more supporting mods that will make you car last longer then you think on the market for your car. Most times the "cheap way" wont make your weekend slider last long .

You sound like the type of guy that doesnt want to spend alot of money on your project. You can always get your stock turbo rebuilt and easyly get 260-280 if not more with support mods. Hope this helps you out a bit, you can check out the guys builds in the project section.

gt2871r is good for 400hp

If you ballin, get a complete HKS 2530 kit. It's a straight bolt on without having to make new lines or fabricate an elbow. Of course, it's also rediculously expensive. Like i said, if you ballin, it's a good turbo for 350ish hp.

Rebuilt stock turbo is similar to HKS GTSS in size and get similar response (enough to scare you if your not used to it and put smile on your face). Full boost of 12psi at around 3500rpm with untuned ECU and no boost controller. With ECU retune, boost controller, full boost should be able to be reached earlier.

GT2871R can be internally gated, but need custom oil, waterfeed, dumppipe, intake pipe. Like HKS GTRS, good for around 440HP at engine with correct housings, etc. Fullboost at around 4000-4500rpm.

For my project, I don't want to have bad suprises and I don't want my car to stay in a garage for ever.
I'm ready to pay a bit more for good quality parts.

I know that the Garrett GT2871R is equivalent to HKS GT-RS, but what is the difference between the HKS GT-RS and the HKS GT2835 other than the housing ? and are they going to fit in the engine bay with the stock manifold ?

There turbos are quite reasonably priced and sound like theyre built quite well,
and are direct replacements.
Would be nice to see what these turbos can do.

I think your best option is to get the RB20 turbo rebuilt.. If not, find yourself a blown RB25 and have it rebuilt.. Cherry turbo's quoted me approx 700$ to have my RB25 rebuilt with very close tolerance journal bearings, steel wheels, different CHRA etc. Journal bearings will increase your spool rate over ball bearings, so if you're still looking for a low end spool around 3k, that may be an option. This turbo would yield around 320 whp with a proper tune, injectors, exhaust etc and still attain full boost below 3700 rpm.

Right now im running ~275 whp and 245 lbs of tq with a stock RB20 turbo with full spool at 3100 rpm.. So if you're looking in that area, it's very doable with your current turbo!

I have a Garrett 2860-5 forsale for 750 obo it will do 350-360 hp. it will bolt on and its internal wastegate.

I put a Garett GT2510 on mine that I bought for around $500 rebuilt. Straight bolt up manifold wise, ball bearing, steel wheels, but had to make custom lines. Wasn't too bad at all really. Let's just say after dyno runs last week I'm at around 350 rwhp. Great turbo that spools super quick and has massive response. Tops out quickly but gets you to the top FAST!!!!!
