Because in many ways the OEM ECU is superior to many standalones. The key is in the tuning, not the system.

There are GTRs running in excess of 1100 bhp on the OEM ecu (chipped of course)

Wow 500whp on a rb20 that is unbelievable! At this point when not doing internals and such to the engine do you not think that this engine would be a ticking time bomb? Many people who make that much hp have an intention for it and when driving it hard wouldn't that baby just blow up after a track day or something?

Also I had no idea the capabilities of oem ecu's that is awesome, but then again the quality that nissan did with these cars i guess i shouldnt be surpised!!!
Miss driving sooooo bad! Need to get a car on the road ASAP!

Only to see how much could be extracted on dyno and engine was refreshed (like new). In theory factory cast pistons can handle 100hp per cylinder or 600hp total for engine. Still another 40hp or so before it reaches 600hp on that RB20DET engine.

Most stick to 400hp at engine on high boost setting due to gearbox, drivetrain. 400hp / 6 = 66.7hp per cylinder or less than 100hp per cylinder for RB20DET engine. Most stock bottomend and over 100,000km RB20DET engines produce around 330hp at engine (268rwhp) on low boost setting for everyday use.

Factory ECU is not superior, just the factory setup, tuned ECU to work with factory engine, factory sensors, wiring, etc. So don't have to setup (install MAP sensor, adjust settings on ECU, etc like on aftermarket ECU) and retune car straight away (as long as A/F ratio is safe) with mild mods, as already has a good base map, settings to work from that was done by factory.

The limit's of RB20DET engine on pump gas will be reached (max i've seen is 653hp with stroked RB20DET) before ECU becomes a problem. This RB20DET ECU (post#258) in SAU dyno result thread with Nistune runs 800cc injectors, blow through 700hp Ford Lightning MAF, 270duration cams, etc -

This is what it sounds like -

        Revs, idles without problems.

Experience is the key to a good tuner. Tuners who struggle with tuning stock ECU don't have enough tuning experience. Good tuner should be able to load a good base map (from previous cars they have tuned with same configuration) and then tune engine.

Oh i didn't know you were on gtrc. I'm assuming your the guy with the s13? Thanks.

and yea haha i just sit at 7/11 all the time.

As you can see I need to take the bumper off and take off a fair bit more so that it doesn't stick up in front of the ic like that. I'm looking for a drift project car, can't decide between s13 or r32 four door.

Yea probly best bet. I have a 20 in my garage. Good condition, bores are all great and the crank appears to have been balanced. probably do 2.2L with the spool rebuild kit.

Not impossible. I only scrape on certain parking lot entrances/driveways etc. The only place I've ever hit on the road would be on 9th ave downtown. I'm thinking of selling this kit to go with uras, let me know if you'd be interested in saving at least 400 off getting it from a dealer.
