  • Marc's Sedan Daily Drift Building Adventure

    hey guys,

ive been on gtrc for quite a while and getting quite familiar a few and i finally paid my car off a couple months ago and im debt free and finally have enough money to start buying stuff.

so i thought the ball would start rolling a little faster now for customizing my 89 gts-t sedan to how i want. i know most of you will notice im still a noob but im just trying and learning as i go.

so here is how it looked the day after i bought it. just washed first time at my house.

and yes this is a gross engine bay, i never washed it once till 2 years later which is a month ago in my garage, the pic of how it is now is much better id say lol.

and who ever has seen pics of my car probly didnt know this sweet detail about it...

i took a few pics tonight of how she sits at the moment lol.

here is some of the wire tuck ive been doing...

anyways im tired and ill explain more of why im doing what i did tomorrow lol.

so this wont be nearly as organized as fankimans lol. i dont think anyone's is. but ill try and post in order as much as possible... but i dont know where alot of the pics i took a couple years ago are.

here's a random list of things ive done to my car since ive gotten it, ill try to post pics of the small projects i did...

i redid my interior headliner and a,b,c pillars in black swede and made speaker molds front and rear out of fiberglass and bondo. rear are 6x9's and front are 6 1/2 rounds FOCAL KP2's.

heres what i did for rear speaker...

i choose kinda what shape i wanted the side to taper, and i stuck with the same shape just with a bigger base and tilt the speakers on a slant to project the sound forward

then i used tape and went from the top ring to the bottom ring and bought insulation foam in a spray can you buy from home depo

then i cut out the extra insulation that foamed inside, then bondo over the foam after taken off the tape.

then i did about 4 coats of bondo, sand in between each obvi to try and achieve the smoothest finish possible and here's the end result before painting...

and their still not painted... yes i made these 2 years ago, i just never decided what color to do, but ill end here, ill post more pics of front speaker build and the the swede refinishing...

hope you enjoy, more to come.

umm i also painted my tail lights, umm not the red as you'll see, just tint the shaded area darker to have more emphasis on the trademark of skylines a bit more... not great pics but good enough.

( if anyone wants to see more pics of anything in particular, your welcome to ask and ill do what i can!!!!!)

            lights removed,

all taped up and sanded ready to be painted, it was like 30% black, 70% clear, and i just 5 light coats. pretty much light coats till i liked it.

after i did the black, i pealed the tape and clear coated the whole light so their wasn't a ridge from the tape line and made the 23 year old red plastic nice and shiny!
here's when i just got it installed the first time...

and here's with normal lighting outside

this is just the camera going funky, but as you can see, the reverse is still very visible and so is the corner signal

and here's the rear end at its best last year, the lights look clean i think, little better then oem, but i feel i went a bit darker then i wanted, but it still looks good.

alright this is for the front speakers, focals, they weight about 8 pounds a speaker which is alot to mount sideways to a door, and making your own mould..

so starting with the frame for the mould, then build from their, so heres the main shape...

im sure you notice the oem speaker holder, i was planning on useing those for help to mount the speaker

and with the door panel on to see how far in or out i wanted it to sit for it to all work out..

now that i liked how it was i had to make a fiberglass mould of the door shape so that when the mould is done it will be flush with the angles the door panel has... not sure if thats confusing but you'll get it.

so starting with duck tape i will cover the area to protect the door panel but also able me to get the shape

then once done that, i can cut the mesh to the desired size i wanted

afterwards i can apply the resin on the mesh

unfortunatly i dont think i have a pic of the outcome... but here's an example, i did the exact same on the door panel where the fabrique use to be,

so heres the skeleton it made, copied the shape, and it was on top of duck tape their again

after this i cut the fiberglass mould in a circular shape as you'll be able to notice in the next pic

so as you can see ^^^^ it came out the shape of the door panel and then i was able to have a bottom shape and top shape, next was to make the sides and to connect the 2 together as you will notice is same procedure as with the rear speakers...
tape it all up, then insulation foam

then remove tape and take a exacto knife and cut off any rough edges to have smooth lines

so because i wanted to make it stronger to hold up that heavy speaker ill fiberglass it all together so its 1 shape and will help with the quality of the sound

and i didnt know how to keep it tight so i just did this lol

so after it dried looked like this

and then did a secondary coat for more strenght

after that i sanded off any big droops and cut anything that wasnt needed

then i can clue the ring that speaker sits in on top

then i can start bondo-ing to start going after the final shape i wanted...
                this is like 2nd coat

this might be 3rd or 4th, dont know

then i wanted to take a pic with speaker, and i had just sprayed primer on the bondo to look more unified

and yeah thats all i have to show so far, i did make em nicer, re did all the sides to make em nicer, the pictures above arnt finish product, i should go put em against my door panel for you to understand how they will look on the car, ill do that tomorrow maybe. but its kinda fun doing custom stuff, just takes a long time. and i made those 6 months ago and i still havnt put them in lol, just sitting on a shelf ahah

if you got questions your welcome to ask!

                thanks for looking!

i have custom BC Racing that are under way, got new rear sway bar, getting rear subframe bushings and collars and got new front and rear camber arms, front tension rods, rear toe and rear upper tension rods... thats what i paid for so far... might do more things, but i think this is good enough for now... ill see how it goes when shes back on the road if i need anything else! but it quite a bit... going from everything oem with cut springs on coilovers to all that should be pretty decent.

so just to keep going on the front speakers... as i was making the last post about all the work made me want to try and finish them, im missing a few pics since i couldnt find the camera but you'll see the progress to almost completion...

so for example this is the mold i made for the door, and thats the part i cut out to use as my base shape so my speaker mold will contour the door nicely.

                            here's and example

as you can see the black sides on the mold are add ons i put today, i just recut a half inch strip of the mold and glued it on the side to add some width. this is because the overall diameter was too small to cover the size of the whole in the door...

( i made some FAIL calculations when cutting first time )

and here's the speaker poking through
