  • Minty r32 gts-T build

So I bought a 1989 r32 gts-t the other weekend, and am about to dive into it head first.
The car although very dirty when I purchased it, was in really good shape.

Came with some gtr wheels that had the paint removed and missing 1 cap.

Interior is in pretty good shape, with all 5 original floor mats.

Car came with original head lights (which I will be putting back in )

Got a turbo timer (broken fuse) and alpine Deck and Speakers.

No name manual boost gauge from japan in Bar (which i will be removing)

    Weighted shift nob.

The boot was also in pretty good shape.

And a very clean/very stock engine bay (minus the apexi cone filter)

Not to mention very low KM for a 1989.

    Now for the nitty gritty.
    Big fat key mark.

Clear coat peeling, and duck tape where the windshield wiper is supposed to be.

God awful light to make it legal.(has two plugs under it that leak badly)

    Common dash bubble.

    Crappy trim EVERYWHERE.

Besides that it looks much better washed

The plan for the car (once our costco 2 post hoist arrives) is as follows.
-Take the entire car apart and remove the engine.
-Take care of any needed body work and repaint it white.
-Send the block away to get deglazed, glazed, polished, ported, ect...
-Gtr body kit all around, minus fenders.
-all new suspension fittings and bushings, sway bars, coil overs, ect...
    -Blitz Nur spec exhaust
-Gtr injectors, fmic, rb25 turbo, fuel pump, plugs, nistune, rev limiter, boost controller, bov.(for the time being.)
-Roll and pull to fit. Rota grid 18+8.5
-Sparco r100 seats and harnesses, prosport gauges, locking hub and wheel.

Lots of updates to come once the car is on the lift, I will keep you guys up to date!
Let me know what you Guys think.

This will be a great build!
Glad to see you have a plan! It appears to be a decent canvas to start with too.

And I'm also interested in this two post hoist you speak of, I've been in the market for a while.

    Staying tuned,
    Brent.

      Thanks!
Yea from what I have heard its a great hoist for a low roof or home garage.
All the reviews I have seen are good with nothing bad to say, and for the price and convenience you can't beat it.

        I like.

If car has sat outside in the weather, remove lower trim on front, rear windows (rust's under there). The front lower trim retaining screws can break, so need a set from Nissan.

Look under car between floorpan, front arch panel (it rust's on that joint, so lift carpet, check for rust). Underseal will bubble there if there's rust.

Check bottom radiator support (can rust there).

Check seam where jack goes on all 4 corners (can bend easily, rust there).

Remove rear bumper and check for rust on joint between bottom of trunk, back of car (rust's on or just above that joint), same on the front with bumper rebar, mounting bolts, etc.

Under battery and where airbox used to be is the other spots where it can rust.

Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you picked up a type M. The regular GTS-t didn't have that switch to move the front spoiler up and down.

I asked Nissan and they said R32 GTS-T Type-M had sports shocks (I assume sports valving), 4 pot front, 2 pot rear brakes, HICAS, LSD, R32 GTR steering wheel with S logo on horn. I know had optional parts like ABS, front spoiler, etc. Also front spoiler should automatically drop after 70km/h (from memory) or can drop, raise via that switch on dash next to steering wheel.

                  Quick update.

Shop is ready, just waiting for the hoist to arrive.

decided that the cup holders had to go (no one is EVER drinking or eating in the car)

Aaaaand of course I broke it, so I guess I will be putting my gauges there

                  Stay tuned for more updates.

Those aircon vents breaking are common (plastic fins are weakened by having sun on it all the time).

Can buy new aircon vents from Nissan (link below has the part numbers, cost) -

The aircon vents should clip in (poke flat head screw driver inbetween vent fins, unclip), so fairly easy to remove, refit.

That bubble on dash can be caused by using silicon shine product on dash, which when combined with sun breaks down glue holding the skin to the foam (what I was told by dash recover specialist). Should only use a wet cloth to clean dash.

One way I was told to fix that bubble is to screw some trim down over the top of it (trim clips on over where screws are that mount trim). I noticed on R33 dash they removed that sharp change in shape, I assume due to that problem.

You're welcome. Also remove wing mirrors, as it's common on Nissan's to rust behind them (R32, R33, Stagea, etc) and I think the part where it rust's is replaceable, at least it is on R33, etc.

The seams inbetween panels under car is where rust happens, so removing all sound deadening and redoing sound deadening is a good idea (can buy it in tins and spray on like panel beaters do or I think can buy it in aerosol cans).

On racecars they dip chassis to remove all sound deadening, paint and put car on a rotisserie and turn car upside down and seal the gaps between panels with flexible sealant (also I think they spot weld the seams as well to strengthen chassis, fit roll cage, strengthen strut towers, etc). Then they paint chassis.

Looking forward to the updates! Only thing I see being an issue for you would be running prosport gauges... Spend a few extra on a upgraded set like STRI or DEFI!!! the quality control on prosport isn't the best and there +/- 1 is more like +/- 4 when it comes to their boost gauges. I had one on my wrx and found out the gauge was off by 4 lbs. when I was getting tuned.

Please don't skimp on the gauges!
waiting till the states lets me own one legally...

Are they really that bad? I am a student, and my whole budget for the car is 5k, and im trying to save money where ever I can.
I thought that they could be a little off but not by that much. looking at defi's prices is making me stay away from them considering I need A/F, oil temp, oil press, and boost.

                              Update

The shop has been coming together much slower than expected, but we are finally there!

Here how it is now, hoist and all installed. (for the most part)

Had the hoist arrive, and we immediately began work on setting it up.

I originally wanted to mount it to the cart. (oem spec)

                              Some of the included parts.

After many measurements, it was decided that I needed less distance between the 2 hoists, so it was moved inward 6 inches, and 3 new inserts where installed. (still waiting on 2) the old mounting anchor's CAN'T be removed; believe me I tried The plan is to just tap the anchors into the sand and to fill the holes with concrete.

Also, found a post on the internet about how people wall mounted there pumps, so I went down to my local Princessauto and had a 38ft hose made up to run the length of the roof above the car, and used the two remaining lines for the lift closest to the pump.

The hoist should be operational late next week, and work can finally begin. all that is left, is for the lines to be bled, and the 2 remaining anchors to be put into the floor.

                              Progress on the car:

                              Removed the following:
                              -gtst stock rotors and pads
                              -front bumper
                              -headlights
                              -hood
                              -exhaust
-seats with seatbelts rails and mounting hardware
-stock gtst wheels, missing 1 center cap (comes with tires 90% tread)
all of which are for sale, if you interested let me know.

                              The seats

Looks kinda funny without the seats in. But its to make room for a sexy pair of sparco r100's

I am currently in search for r32 gtr parts including and not limited to the following:
                              -rear seats
                              -gtr injectors
                              -gtr hood
-gtr headlights, turning indicators and grille
                              -gtr side skirts and baffles
                              -gtr intercooler
                              -rb25 turbo

Stay tuned, lots of updates to come!
