  • Do I need new coil packs?

    Hey guys,

Some of you know that i'm collecting parts to swap an RB20 into my Zenki S14. Well I checked my coil packs today and I'm not sure if they are good or not. Two of them have a broken spring and one of them (which I bought here two weeks ago) is missing the carbon tip. I saw the procedure to clean the coils, but I want to know if they are usable or if I can repair them before I install them on the engine.

Here are the pics, the one on the top looks like he's in good shape. The one at the bottom looks clean but is missing the carbon tip. It's the one I bought here.

This one, the one from the top doesn't look good and the spring is broked. the one from the bottom had a chip gone from the carbon top but other that that it looks good.

On this one, the one from the top looks fine also but the one at the bottom has a broke spring alos.

So, what do I do? Can I buy new springs and carbon tips for that?

    Thanks guys.

These don't look like RB20 coils to me, or are they? Mine dont have that metallic tip that yours do.

It sure looks like they could use some cleaning.

Clean them, then test the resistance of them. 0.6 - 0.9 ohms, first pin to second pin.

Well they came from the engine I bought from WRick on this forum. He can confirm you that these are OEM RB20 coils (Unless he took the RB20 coils and gave me his RB25 coils but I think they are the same)

I'll test the resistance and i'll let you know but what do I do with the broke springs?

Rick is a genuine guy and wouldnt give you something crap. I can vouch for that. However, I am pretty certain that these coils look like neither RB20 nor RB25 ones. I have had both engines in my Skyline, so I can confirm that.

Look thru the thread on cleaning your coils and you will see.

As regards the spring, well you have to get a replacement one. No need to go to Nissan for it. A hardware store or an auto shop should be able to give you something comparable. And to be honest, you dont really need that metallic tip thingy in your coils. Try taking the broken springs out from the coils, because they need to be cleaned up. Spray some contact cleaner/WD40 to do that with a pair of long nose pliers.

Nice, thanks for the answer. That was exactly what I was looking for. I will clean them all and replace all the springs.

BTW I just tested the resistance and it goes from 0.6 to 0.7 ohms so they should be good.

They look the same as all 12 of my RB20 coils. Mine all have tips and springs though

I'm 90% sure RB20 coils are the same as RB26, just 2 less. Your carbon pins are OEM 89-90 and the spring only are post 91. The dust boot that should be there just stops contaminents from going near the high voltage secondaries. The corrosion built up can be cleaned, like any look connection building it up on a battery terminal. If they test well on the prim and sec, they are good as long as you have good secondary contacts. It doesn't matter if you go all carbon pins or springs (springs were a sufficient conductive surface I guess, they used the carbon pins to reduce arcs and pitting which never really happened... so they went to cheaper springs. If you have a good meter (fluke 123 is ok) you can get the turns ratio of each coil and see how close they compare (this doesn't really matter unless it's over 5% difference)... have fun.
                    No build thread.

haha i just cleand mine out today,,,

Difference was noticeable not drastic since they were cleaned about 4 months ago when i got my sparks replaced NGKs...

Um electrical contact cleaner, some sand paper, and also a small dremel bit to sand down the inside...IMO lose the carbon bits unless you absolutely need them...my car is a 92 so none of mine had them....

In your case since they are so dirty i would clean them really well slip them back in and give them a shot and see how it goes...

all pre r34 skylines use the same coils

                        there are two models though
the carbon tip ones are old
                        just spring are new

                        22433-60U01 - old - carbon tip
                        22433-60U02 - new - spring, no carbon

And yeah, those are oem, I have both kinds for the RB20, one set with springs, one without. Maybe someone with blown coils will sell you the springs and tips? Lots of coils dying on here so its worth a try.
