  • Oil Leaking near Valve cover

I'm starting to get really annoyed by this oil leak that i've got going on, and i'd like some advice or ideas here

Originally thought it might be my rear seal, but i noticed the oil around the valve cover and the side of the block covered in it, so i bought new cover gaskets and replaced them now the oil leak is a little worse. it was a couple ounces every time i turned off the engine, now its closer to 100ml or something.

Has anyone had an issue with the rubber stopper/plug located at the rear of the vavle cover on the bottom half. It didn't feel entirely tight in there, but it appears the design of the stopper is meant seal when pressure is applied..

    ideas?

Those 15 year old rubber o rings by the bolts are not going to do it anymore. You need to replace them at an O ring shop. (Try BC Bearing, Raeside in Coquitlam or Lordco)

The bolts don't need to be torqued right down, but snug. The O ring stoppers on the bolts are designed to give it a firm feel. After 15+ years of heat and pressure, mine were flattened, hardened and cracked.

Try replacing those rubber stoppers on the valve cover bolts.

My cars engine leaked in the same spot.

A mechanic mate mentioned to me about replacing the washers under the bolts and fixed it for me.

Not sure if he applied a little bit of liquid gasket to the front and rear, which most seem to suggest to do.

100% agree with the new washer/oring combo, plus when you remove the bolts, pull the covers off and put some silicone or liquid gasket around the rear half moon seals....every little bit helps.

Thanks guys for teh insight. I'll have to look into those rings asap. I'm entirely convinced that this half moon crap is big part of the problem though.

The trail of the drip leads back to behind the block facing the firewall, irritates the hell out of me cause i can't physically see the drip. But that half moon needs a good layer of sealant i think

They seem to leak by cylinder # 6. Most likely because they are the hottest? Least cooled and vented.

Mine leaked for a bit, and kept being burnt by the tranny. I got annoyed and replaced the gasket and O ring, and while I was at it changed my oil.

            No leak.

There is heat build up around the firewall.

I've noticed O on the oil pressure gauge is a sign that there is an oil leak. Aftermarket oil pressure gauge is a handy tool to have.

Ya, this seems to be my issue, its right on the intake side of #6. I'm gonna try and change my rings and dbl check my gasket to make sure it didn't fold over when i put the new one in
