  • GTST + SR20 ...anyone?

Thinking about selling off the built RB I have and going 4-banger.
This is strictly for weight and balance reasons.

Curious if anyone has had any experience doing the swap?
Or perhaps seen something similar being done elsewhere?

My primary concern is the wiring.
And also if an SR bolts to an RB transmission/clutch?
I know it physically fits, and if need be I can make mounts. But I want to know if its all too big a headache to bother.

    Thanks for any info!

I know for an RB20 swap into an S13 you can use the R32 cross member and the whole job bolts in without having to fiddle with the mounts, therefore it should work the other way around, if you put an S13 engine cross member in the SR20 should bolt right into the car.

I believe someone on the GTR UK forums had a plan to do this but in the end wound up doing the LS V8 swap. It seemed pretty straight forward from what I read.

why not just stick with the rb? or why not buy an s chassis? this swap makes absolutely no sense to me other than being unique

webber; weight/balance benefits aside, maybe I just like the skyline. Or maybe I've been trying to sell the damn car to fund an SR cefiro with no luck. Or perhaps you could say something useful?

Thanks for the good input so far people.

I actually plan on doing this awhile ago and I did all my research. 8-) 8-)

I was using a 240sx cross-member for the engine as it is a complete bolt on. No modification require. I am using a stock SR tranny for it. The tranny crossed member needs some work as the holes don't line up. You have to weld new plate on n re-drill the holes. You also need custom driveshaft to make it work.

If I am going to go do it again, I will use the 350z 6 speed tranny with the mazxorwork VQ tranny adapator conversion kit. The newer Z33 6 speed is as strong as the RB25/Z32 and it was proven.

I also manage to get a V-mount intercooler/radiator set up with the SR. You don't need to cut the rad support. I still have the V-mount set up if you are interested. The radiator is custom made cross flow one which has the outlet n inlet fit perfectly with the SR. If you want the V-mount set up, let me know. It is still brand new sitting in my house.

Thats as far as i went because I didn't start doing the wiring and I sold the engine n the car seperatly. But if you have any questions..let me know, I'll see if can help you out.

            Edit*

If you are interested about the V-mount set up. Here is my old drawing:

There is a relocation for the Rad cap since it is suppose to be the highest point of the whole recirculating system. I fabricate a tank with aluminum tubes and plate with 1 inlet, outlet and a rad cap ontop with the hose going to the resirvoir. The hot water will then travel to the top of the rad. and across to the bottom. Notice how the outlet is pointing upward instead of downward, this will eliminate the air bubble created in the whole system. Thats where the hard parts come because it is hard to find a radiator that has collect outlet/inlet location that fit the SR after it was flipped backward. A Crossflow rad is also better because the water will have more time to travel across compare to downflow. This is why I chose this set up.

On the intercooler, it is very straight forward, low mount GT3071R. Since I am using the S13 Black top, the manifold is different and the throttle body was poiting 45% upward which will make my piping weird. So i went to get a JUN style replica intake which have a throttle that point down slightly which will simplify my pipings. Also with the intake pipe from the air filter, I locate the filter UNDER the metal plate where it bolt the stock air box. The filter was bolted in the passenger side bumper vent so it will eliminate all the hot air from the engine bay.

Lastly, i hope everything works for you.

ive heard about it being done, only down fall is that the skyline is just a F*ing heavy car for that engine, the s-chassis only weighs about 2300-2400 pounds, depending on USDM or JDM model, also 4 cylinder engines get good gas mileage, but they are very violent engines in their power stroke, they only get one ignition stroke per 180 degrees of rotation of the crank, thats a lot of unused power gap between strokes, where as in an inline 6 is actually a VERY balanced engine and has nearly the perfect balance of power strokes 120 degrees between them versus 180 also the SR20 to the RB20, the RB20 gets way better gas mileage and while still being in the heavier chassis, only downfall to RB20 is less aftermarket options...so if you go anything other than RB20 please just throw an RB25/26 in it for the respect of the Skyline....it deserves the best lol

                    thanks for info but,
If I had wanted a discussion on the ethics of an SR swap, I would have posted in the discussion forum.

please keep it to technical info on making it happen, thanks.

Maybe I could help. I had an Sr swapped in a 4 door R32 GTE for a customer about 3 years ago. Now I had NOTHING to do with the swap, in fact it wasnt even done in Canada or Japan but it was done at the same shop that Arhamz's RB25 Neo and LHD conversions were done.

                      What you will need is
                      S13 crossmember
                      S13 motor Mounts
S13 Sr motor, ecu, tranny, harness
                      S13 Driveshaft
                      S13 Cluster
.....prtetty much an s13 front clip

1)With the cross member the engine will drop in but you will need to modify the tranny mount for it to fit.
2)Then you need to wire it up. It shouldnt be a problem seeing how theres a million "how to wire an rb into an s13" Threads and people have basic knowledge of it. The process should be easy. Any Good tuner shop can do it but I heard the Fuse box wiring was a pain in the @$$.
3)Then the Cluster. The guy who had the 4 door sr told me his tach wasnt responding well. I suggested he replace it with a 240 cluster tach and it solved his problem.
                      4) You need an SR rad. The SR rad sits perfectley in a Skyline. I also suggest getting an electric rad fan.
                      5) Intercooler. You can eighter get a front mount and you need custom piping or go sidemount and you can make it work.

                      Heres 2 pics i found
