  • Holset turbo

Just wondering if anyone is running a Holset turbo and if so which one? Pics would be great as well if you could state if your using the stock manifold.

Im looking at purchasing a HX35W from a 99-01 cummins diesel and would like to clarify a few things prior to purchase.

    My car is a S13 swapped Rb25

i wont say to much as i dont know what flange was on my 300zxt.
but it colted right up, quickish spool and good for 450ish whp.
id say check into the flange specs and try it, you will more than likley need an external wastegate, diesels make alot of boost lol.

other than good luck, i would go for it or atleast try it. they have been placed on smaller motors than the RB25 so im sure spool time shouldnt be that bad,

Turbo is good to 550 whp and about 35-40psi of boost.

I am running one on my GTR. People say its like a ball bearing turbo as holset used a very functional design that spools extremely quick.

      Picture for ya.

I cant tell from the pics but is that the HX35?

Very nice set up and cant wait to see some numbers from that beast! I have done enough research and am trying to do an afforable build as for bolt ons and the Holset seems to be a good choice with a good history.

Why do you suggest the external wastegate? I am only going to be running maybe 16-18 psi on it and was thinking of just upgrading my internal wastegate and running it on the holset (as long as it is a HX35W).

Yes that is a HX35, made 486whp at 14psi. Should make 550whp at 18psi this year with a better tune.

Well for wastegates.. a 44mm tial is perfect. Just sounds sooo much better at full throttle with an open screamer pipe.

I bet, so you used a top mount manifold with the tial 44mm. Very nice!
I will most likely use a external wastgate and will try to keep this updated with progress

              Found a turbo!

Now just looking at getting some injectors for this. I was thinking of 660cc as it is still a stock block. Aiming for around 16-18psi.

Would this work as an adapter and a external gate http://cgi.ebay.ca/SKYLINE-VL-TURBO-...1%7C240%3A1318

Or do you have any toher suggestion

From what I understand a external wastegate controls boost better (prevents spiking at higher revs) and provides a smoother boost curve which provides a smoother power, torque curve. Internal wastegates have a wastegate port size problem when you up the boost level, which makes the boost spike at higher rpm's and boost curve oscillates, so is bumpy looking which can affect power, torque curves.

to a degree. wastegate placement also plays an important part in controlling boost effectively. an external wastegate that is placed on a single runner is not going to work better than an internally wastegated turbo. i've seen this on a few manifolds.

you can build a manifold so that it has a wastegate priority design, which is best for consistent boost control... but space is often a constraint with manifold design and a wastegate priority manifold isn't always an option. if that is the case, placing the wastegate as close to the turbine wheel as possible is ideal. the general rule of thumb is to have your wastegate at a point in the manifold where there it will see the most pressure (ie right before the turbine wheel). in most cases placing the wastegate right directly onto the merge collector will work fine.

So that egay flange may work well aslong as there are no clearence issues that arise

Collector is where it's normally mounted. Some mount external wastegate to exhaust housing of turbo.

Greedy in Japan used one of those adaptors on stock exhaust manifold for one of their early turbo kit's (IHI turbo instead of Mitsubishi turbo). From photo's I've seen in a Australian magazine of this turbo kit on a RB20DET, the dumppipe looks like it needs to be custom made to match frontpipe. Also needs custom oilfeed, water feed, return hoses.

so i can place dibs on a holset turbo but im wondering if the turbo with a adapter peice would fit in our engine bay?

do you know if the holset is a t3 flange? or were could i find a top mount manifold with a external wastegate/

Stock exhaust manifold is best in my opinion. Proven for 10sec 1/4.

Some have run external wastegate off the top of exhaust wheel housing. Basically welded a little pipe onto exhaust housing with a flange on the other end for external wastegate.

well i found ss autochrome but im scared if the wastegate placement is wrong and i get boost creep or spikes... but since the wastegate is welded by the flange that should be good enough right?

they are really cheap and come with lifetime warrenty but im scared that they will start to fail with a heavy turbo like the holset, the top mount manifolds look a little flimsy?

not to mention camptions like this
You should receive anywhere between 15-30 extra HP. And the sound is the unmistakable Racing Championship
                            lol
