  • Rb25det clutch issues.

OK guys i have a 1994 rb25det. That car has roughly 90,000 km on it. The stock lasted till about 85,000 and it started slpping real bad. So i went to a local shop and had a Competition Clutch stage 4 6 puck ceramic clutch. The clutch lasted about a week and welded to the pressure plate. OK! user abuse! no warrenty. Alright another $1000 roughly to install the identical clutch disc. Drove it for a week and welded to either the flywheel or pressure plate. somehow the clutch broke free and was usable. But when you let out the clutch it made some horrible noises. but then stopped. they gave me the car back no charge! said it was fine. i drove it for one week. doing a few pulls against a toyota soarer. and on the 3rd pull it welded to the flywheel. I have some pictures to show what the most recent clutch assembly looks like.

i cant get the flywheel off right now i gotta wait till tomrrow to get an impact. but anyone got any ideas of whats causing these problems?

did u start baging on it after u hade it installed?? did u change or machine the flywheel before installing the new clutch????? in most cases the clutchs(that i seen) did that cause it wasnt brokin in properly (450-500 kms normal driving very low boost) ..as the clutch has to set in and where its self in under normal driving(stop n go) pretty much if ur dumping the clutch and baging on it before break-in u will keep replacing them and wasting money ...from what it looks like in the pics u were pretty hard on it lol

thats what we thought with the first clutch but the other 2 clutches were broken in mintly. around 1400. on each clutch. then welded

thats weird, usually if you break them in properly for 500 km you will never have a problem

i did drive it a little hard im not going to lie. but from what ive heard from alot of people is that 6 puck ceramics really dont need much of a break in time. but the other clutch had the idential problem and the break in was absolutly perfect. and it still welded. even when it fixed itself i drove another 2000k on it very nicely and it did the same thing. after 2 pulls against and aristo. and dont get me wrong this is a stock rb25 running 14 psi of boost. its not a 450hp car. maybe 260-270 horse. this clutch SHOULD not have problems taking a little bit of a beating.. thats the whole reason i didnt put another oem clutch in.

well when i ran one i found before the clutch was broken in it was slipping really bad under power, it didn't start to hook up until almost exactly 450km

Did you get them both installed from the same shop? If this were happening to me I'd be pretty pissed. I would think it was maybe misaligned or a poor/defective clutch from the sounds of it. I may have some alternative places in town u can try.maybe send me a PM and I'd get a 2nd opinion or maybe some1 will post some other ideas of what could cause this.

Yeah i've never heard anything bad about comp clutches. I ran one in my civic back in the day and was extremely solid. All i can think of is the shop must have done a poor install of the clutch to create that kind of issue. Like that pressure plate is heavy enough you should never have slip.

Ive talked to several clutch companies and showed them pictures of my clutch and all they say is that a clutch is not supposed to do that. How do i tell if it was not aligned properly? what sorts of things do i look for. every other pad on the disk was rubbing very hard on the outside. of the pressure plate.

Yeah i dunno must be bad installation. To see if it was installed right look at the fingers on the pressure plate, you should see an even contact spot on every finger from the throw out bearing. If they all look the same it was installed good but if you see some fingers with far less to no wear, or others with too much, the clutch was not installed properly.

check slave cylinder, not saying it could produce this but maybe if you said it was slipping.

just pull the boot back on the slave and if fluid leaks out you need to replace. did you smell burnt clutch or anything? squelling ECT?

thats a good point. that would mean he was frying it every time he engaged the clutch. Which would make sence to it seizing on for say.
