hey if ur spare is 1.4 ohms thats also much too low
do the math i= v/r...12volts/1.4ohms = roughly 8.55 amps
however initial engagement of the clutch will draw more of this prob hit 10 amps and more which is why it may not blow instantly but yea u need new coil
have you heard of the theroy it takes more power to get something started? but once started its less power to maintain it?
in addition cars are are more than 12 volts......13 to 14 volts running which is even more amperage.
and to answer your question .........yes i have done the replacement of the coil alone in the car. its not that bad once i look back on it, i had to remove the rad and make sure you have a set of quality snap ring pliers.
