I wanted to bring this thread back but also add to it.
the VG30 turbo the Z31 turbo, is capable of 300+hp with PROPER setup. saw one guy make 350hp but that was maxing it out on the stock turbo..
they have STEEL compressor wheels and turbine wheels. they are old, as you know.
there are TWO types of VG turbos. the standard T3 and T25/T3 the T3 was used from 84-87/4 turbo models after that the engine compression was raised and they used a T25 compressor with a T3 turbine. everyone says the T3's max at 14psi, remember the VG30ET Z31's don't use intercoolers so it maxes at 14psi because of hot air, turbos are very capable but you need a SUPER efficient intercooler.
if you buy these turbos on a Z31 board or group they usually go between $60-$100 because their so plentiful.
the 280ZX turbos come with the same turbos factory. T3. the 280ZX are not water cooled and the 84 turbo Z31 T3's are not water cooled either, everything after 1984 is watercooled.
