  • A Weird RB20DET??

    H'okay so...

I just picked up the new motor for my GTSt (an RB20DET with only 20 - 30K KM on it!!)

anyways.. in tearing it down I've noticed two differences:

A: the cam gear cover doesn't say RB20 on it..

B: the fuel rail has two FPRs

I know it was attached to an auto gearbox.. but that's the only unique thing about it as far as I know...

I'll post pics up when I get a chance to take them..

Anyone know exactly what this thing's story is? or are these common differences?

one is FPR, one is a fuel pressure damper.

I removed it long time ago and have not had any problems other than an AN aluminum fitting snapping for no reason what so ever.

Ya wouldn't surprise me it has no effect. I've never seen a vehicle with that

R32 RB25DE engine cambelt cover is blank -

Sometimes is fitted to RB20DET engine when it's stroked. Or used on RB30DET engines. Or is a turbocharged R32 RB25DE engine.

Fuel Pressure Damper is there due to fuelpump that varies fuel pressure.

Can wire the fuelpump so it runs 100% all of the time and remove Fuel Pressure Damper. Only downside is fuelpump lifespan.

                    All common..
Fuel damper, series 2 cam cover with no brand on it.. Auto tranny is seen quite often as well.. Just dont sell as frequently.
And as far as 20-30,000 km's is concerned, say's who?..
Possible, but highly doubtful. I'd do a compression test first, grab the average of those. Above 130 and you should be safe, however, pulling the head if the motors already out of the car will be a good learning curve, as well as safe you some future hassle.. good to check oil quality as well to make sure nothing is lingering in there - ie. sludge deposits, metal fragments, quite possibly rings or even piston chunks if it's in bad shape..

Good stuff! I was hoping it was a later model rather than an earlier one..

As for the 20K KM it was pulled from a front clip with something like 25,000km on it.. a friend of mine saw the motor in the clip with the cluster.

I know there's no way to be 100% certain... but the lack of any grease, dirt or sludge on the motor is impressive. As soon as I can borrow a digi-cam I'll post up a few pics..

I can't wait to compression test it. I'll have to take it off the engine stand and bolt it back up to a gearbox so I can (on a side note what's the verdict on compression testing it with an impact wrench on the main pulley assembly?)

Probably easier for you to just to just hook up a 12v source to your starter's + and - leads. Get a car battery with jumpers and it'll do the trick.
