  • rb26 cams on rb20

i want straight to the point answers, have any of you done this, or physically seen it done and run.

It won't work because ramp rate of solid cams is more aggressive than hydraulic cams. Also doesn't suit hydraulic lifters that can pump up and hold valves open at higher rpm's with solid cams. You would need to change to Tomei solid lifters, Tomei valve springs, adjustable camgears, ECU retune to make it work.

For less $$$ (half the cost of new cams), can get stock RB20DET cams reground to be more aggressive and won't affect drivetrain longevity and works with stock valve springs, stock ECU, etc -

Need to optimize & tune your engine to gain maximum horsepower and torque. Unlock serious RPM potential with high performance Kelford Cams.

It's sort of what Tomei Poncams are, except they make new cams with regrinded stock cam specs.

^er, you mean it will work, just not as good as possible. Its hydro-lifter cam with unadjusted solid lifters you cant do. If the hydro's in a rb20 are pulled and drained before instal of gtr cam, they will adjust to the appropriate length. It's just not the greatest thing to do for their longevity.

The problem everybody (except for a few tight-lipped people) seems to encounter is that TDC-position for rb20 cams appears to be different relative to gtr cams. After much, much, much looking about, that is the big unknown; where/how to position the cam. Adj. gears appear to be required to ultimately make things work, once the cam-TDC is ball-parked.
After mulling it over for a year, I'm going to give it a try shortly.

I forgot about the really, really long duration of the solid profile. my bad.

However, with a regrind of the rb26 ramps, you get the benefits and lose the problems. In my situation this is better than re-grinding the entire profile of my stock cams because 1. simpler/cheaper machining, 2. less intensive machining = slightly better retention of lobe-face hardness, and 3. no drawn-out down-time with no car.

plus it's still affordable vs. poncams. 650$ for used cams is not cheap.

as far as i know as long as you collapse the lifters before the cams get dropped in it will probably work, you will need to fiddle around wit hthe cam timing. the only problem with collappsing the lifters is you gotta pray they will all pump up. failing to do this may end up in valves staying partially open.

besides that they will wear alot faster.

this thread, litterally re invented my faith in all you skyline owners, as personally owning a gtr and gtst, i have done loads of research on all different setups, as my fellow peers, i am happy to hear your opinions, it will work, and i already know thing, it will lower the life of your head but with tuning and valve timing it works. thanks everyone. and if its not too forward....i love you

jk i just really like you
