  • can rb25 cams work on a 20?

    anyone can confirm?

One might ask why? Same lift and duration between 20/25 cams.

VVT / NVCS on front of RB25DET inlet cam. No VVT / NVCS on front of RB20DET inlet cam. Never done it myself, but I read that people swap RB20DET cams into RB25DET with adjustable camgears to remove VVT / NVCS.

No, rb25 has VCT on inlet cam. Don't think you could do it.

Variable Cam Timing. It's like along the lines of a hydraulic driven (using oil) way of adjusting valve timing on front of cam to get more hp, torque at lower rpm's and more hp torque at higher rpm's.

so if you throw on a set of ajutebole cam gears it would take the vvt off?

Not sure if you can replace the hydraulic part with adjustable camgear. Most replace with non VVT / NVCS cams, adjustable camgears. But there are bigger hp, torque gains with VVT, so it's not worth removing. Even on RB26, fitting HKS Vcam gives more torque, hp at lower rpm's on RB26 over a RB28. But very expensive.

so your saying that cam gears dont give as much gain? why would anyone even buy them then?

Adjustable camgears do help to produce more hp, torque throughout powerband or more at lower revs or more at higher revs (playing with powerband shape or basically where you want the hp, torque to be). For example on RB20DET when adjusted to get more hp throughout powerband, including highrpm's (more for street, racetrack use) and bonus is boost builds 300-400rpm?? or so earlier -

But VVT allows you to gain alot more hp, torque at lower rpm's (including building boost earlier, which is one of the reasons why RB25DET with VVT is better than RB20DET at spooling bigger turbo's earlier) and higher rpm's. From what I understand, most just add a adjustable exhaust camgear to help in gaining more peak hp with a VVT engine. Can see by just adjusting exhaust camgear, that it produces more peak hp on above dynochart.

NO - The actual RB25 inlet cam itself has been machined specifically for that application with VCT and will NOT work in a RB20. However, I think the exhaust cams are the same.

correct, the rb20 and 25 ext cams are identical, in fact, TOMEI exhaust cam says: RB20/25 on the exhaust cam.

Intake however, has NVCS and has ONE hole instead of four (for RB20/26 cam gears to bolt on to)

This is the problem I've been having w/ since RHDJapan ****** up my order after I specifically asked for RB20 intake cam, and even stated, "four holes for cam gears". I get the camshaft today, and what do you know, ONE bolt for RB25. I sent one angry email within minutes of opening the box. Oh, I also waited more than 3 weeks for it to arrive too. Incompetent fools..
