  • Enough is enough.

Hey guys, just trying to get some ideas.

Im currently at the point of being forced to park my gtst. Once again I'm having fuel problems. Over the last 12 days, I've been leaning towards ignition problems (it would randomly bog out, lose rpm and stall). It happened about 6 times over 8 days, two days driving 40km didn't happen once but I babied it staying between 15-2900rpm. It felt like any time I gave her any force to accelerate quicker, it would happen not long after. Its happened in practically every condition (in neutral; accelerating; slowing down; starting it - rpms would rise but wouldn't hold - happened twice, third time I pumped her a little and it seemed to work; once sadly right on the tracks).

But after today, now I have no idea, thankfully I got her back into my drive way. Once again, she bogged down on me, a couple times this has worked - I pumped the gas which kept the rpms up, but it wouldn't hold and ended up stalling. I got her back up after two tries starting her but within seconds, bogged down but this time,I didn't release the gas (were talking around 1600 rpms, the car stuttered (bogged down, then like "popped" forward before bogging out). I sat there praying begging her to start. Someone, somewhere, somehow had her start perfectly, got her into second, stayed at 30km and drove straight home without having to stop (two sets of lights and a highschool 30 minutes before school was out). The second I got into the drive way, before I could put it into neutral, rpms dropped and stalled.

The reason Im throwing this up here is because my car fund is empty - I'm trying to pull the cash together just to get someone to look at it but in the event someone has experienced something along these same lines, I was hoping to hear what they did.

I had a fuel pump was replaced with a Walbro 255 - but it was running fine for the last month and a half. Fuel filter's been replaced several times this summer, and had basic maintenance done to her in Feb (spark plugs, tune etc).

I know this is a long shot, but doesn't hurt trying.

I will take the first crack at this one. The first time I read through it seemed like you had the typicl MAF problem where the 15 year old solder heats up breaking contact and making the car bog and stall out, however you havnt mentioned anything about how long it takes before the car starts acting up.
My other thought is that you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check all of your plumbing and stick your ear under the hood and listen for any hissing if you can keep her running

Thanks, I'll start her up tonight and have a listen.

The problem with how long it takes is it's been all over the place. There's been days it didn't happen, then the drive into work might be fine, but the drive home could give me problems. Up until yesterday, it didn't seem to get any worse (would stall but I could always start her up no problem - with the one exception on that one day the rpms wouldn't hold until I pumped her).

MAF is the first thing I thought of too - took it to my buddies a couple days ago since I have no experience what so ever but we didn't have a chance to get to it. I second guessed myself on the MAF because of the issues I had earlier in the year with the stock fuel pump that I had, MAF was one of those things that came up then - its an assumption right now as I couldnt remember 100% but I think the service guys checked that but I guess it's something I'll have to verify for my self.

Thanks again for your post, I'm not sure I helped with your timing question.

        Try checking these:

        - Plugs
        - Clogged fuel filter
        - Vac leak
        - Ignitor (car will stall after ignitor gets hot if it's failing)

Does it happen only when the engine is hot? Does the car restart right after, or do you need to let it cool down?

Thanks will check these as well, a few days ago I would have said it didn't matter, but yesterday after the really bad stutter/bog down, letting it sit for 3 minutes let me start her and get her home.

If the fuel filter is clogged (I think I recalled reading somewhere the fuel filter is easy to get to), this would be the 4th time this summer changing it (in 11,000km).

Try switching your ignitor with a working one if you can, it's an easy part to rule out. If it usually stalls after the car is hot, ignitor might be your culprit.

Would the ignitor also get hotter if the car was being pushed?

Pushing the car will create more heat in the engine bay and heat up the ignitor quicker so yeah. When the ignitor is on its way out, it intermittently stops working under high temps which causes the car to stall.

I would also take the maf out and resolder the pins or borrow a working one for a while to rule that out as well.

Get yourself the Engine Manual for our Skylines. Its on GTRC somewhere. Go thru everything you think is wrong by yourself or with a friend. The manual shows you how to test most sensors easily, and some not so easy. Save yourself the money and diagnose the problem yourself.
                      Sounds like ignitor to me.
