Best to use Nissan repair gasket kit (headgasket, valve seals, intake, exhaust gaskets, etc) and Tomei RB20DET 1.2mm 80.5 bore metal headgasket (same as stock headgasket), correct tenstile ARP head studs (there are different types of headstuds for different applications).RESPONSE MONSTER

yeah i have a set of arp head studs. so i would have to get the head bored to 80.5 for that gasket you mentioned?
so get a full Nissan repair kit, use everything in that besides the head gasket, and buy the Tomei RB20DET 1.2??
whats wrong with the head gasket that comes with the kit??
i think im gonna buy this:
LOL that tomei head gasket is twice as much as the entire oem kit that include a head gasket!!!Last edited by amnash; 11-14-2010, 02:30 AM.- Adam

From what I understand, headgasket squishes and spreads out when compressed by head, hence the 80.5mm bore.
Metal headgasket = stronger, thicker seal around cylinders. When boost levels are raised, this is important (reliability). Can sell the stock headgasket in Nissan repair gasket kit to recoupe cost's or keep stock headgasket as a spare headgasket.
Tomei is not cheap, but one of the best headgasket options for RB20DET. Pay for quality.Last edited by Skym; 11-14-2010, 08:18 AM.RESPONSE MONSTER

the oem gasket looks like its metal also.. just a softer metal? i would rather spend that 300 on bearings and materials.. so the big question is.. how much boost could a oem head gasket handle??- Adam

Stock headgasket has a frayed seal around cylinders, not thick solid line type of seal like metal headgasket.
With GTS-R (racing version of RB20DET), 24psi? with stock headgasket with factory T3/To4E turbo. Produced around 440hp at engine.
With R32 RB20DET, 22psi from a TD05 turbo, peak power at 6000rpm (boost level makes up for lack of revs), around 360hp at engine (had problem with turbo failing), which is quite a low hp result for that turbo at 22psi.
So you can run ridiculous boost levels on dyno, but it probably won't last under hard use with weight of car, etc (racetrack, etc). Why, because engine temps get higher and stock headgasket gets crushed by head warping, which breaks seals around cylinders. With metal headgasket it's alot stronger, so has higher resistance to crushing and breaking seal around cylinders. Also like I said above, seal around cylinders is thicker, stronger with metal headgasket.Last edited by Skym; 11-15-2010, 05:21 AM.RESPONSE MONSTER

ah ok, ill want to run 15boost . ill bite the nail and pick one of these up off ebay the gasket, being 1.2mm thick instead of stock 1.8?...would that give you a gain in hp just from the extra pressure? just a minute amount?- Adam

it will not give you an hp gain. if you are only wanting 15pounds of boost the stock gasket will hold up, however if you are in there and already doing all the work why not just pay the little extra now so when you will want more boost, and i assure you will, then your engine is ready to go.
