  • RB20DET Cold Start Problems (dies under throttle)

As the weather has been getting colder I have been having more issues with my car in the morning. If it -10 out and i go start my car i have to crank it six times and give it like 10% trottle so it can finallly hold its idle. Now just cause its holding idle it is not good to drive. At first it wont rev over 2000rpms, you can give it full throttle and it sounds like a crappy rev limiter (I believe it runs way to rich) it even makes pop sounds in the engine. After the car is close to opperating temp it still acts up a bit it wont rev past 4000 rmps or so. Once it has reached normal operaing temp it runs fine, lots of power and will rev to redline.

What is it that assists the engine for cold starts? I had a high idle but i adjusted it at the air idle control screw.

Any suggestions? I could even make a movie of the issue if somebody has some promising imput and would like to see the issue.

If revs keep increasing, it could be faulty coolant temp sensor affecting warmup tables. Check ECU for coolant temp sensor error code.

With initial warmup, if engine is running rich enough, ECU can detect this internally and pull ignition timing (protects engine during warmup) thus making engine not rev if ignition timing is pulled enough. The colder coolant gets, the richer engine runs with warmup tables and the more ignition timing is pulled. Makes startup that's already too rich for modified car even worse and engine struggles to start or idle.

It's hard to understand what's going on if you've never seen what stock ECU does during warmup.
