Hey guys, never found a for sure answer. When installing drop in tomei PonCams in an rb25 s1 do you have to drain the lifters or are they literally just bolt in and go?
Ya, it's literally that simple.. However even pulling the head and affiliated parts like the buckets and what not.. the hydraulic lifter system will refill once the pump begins to muster up pressure..
You kind of deal with it on a daily basis; when you dont run the car for extended periods of time, you hear what seems to be a lot of valve slap; just your lifters building up oil pressure.

You're meant to fit new lifters (applies to hydraulic, solid lifter) with new cams, as lifters are bedded-in with each lobe on cam and the old lifters were bedded-in with stock cams. Also fit new valve springs. Then do the break in procedure. That's if you want valvetrain to be reliable.
I agree with that slap sound when engine hasn't been running for a while. I crank engine longer and seems to solve that problem.

Right, good point. It's safe to re-use lifters as long as you replace the buckets in their appropriate position, that way any wear amongst the shims is uniform and not displaced after reinstallation. However in your case Brian, you wont need to as you're not removing the buckets. I agree though, changing all these and doing the proper break in is a GREAT way to prolong the life of your valvetrain.. I plan to do that with my new springs/cams/valves etc.

From what I understand, more aggressive cams shorten lifespan of valvetrain components, so replacing with new parts becomes more important.
I think with Poncams, they are not aggressive enough to affect lifter, valve springs, etc. From what I can remember, Tomei mention this about Poncams on their website. They are similar to regrounded stock cams that drop in, but new blanks are better for longevity.
ya the upgrade i was thinking was the standard 8.5 mil 256 duration cam. Nothing crazy just a bit better than stock. Having said that any opinions on who is the best to buy them from? Best price, service etc?
