  • Changing water pump 101 basics

Hi guys, just bought a gtst and the water pump leaking like crazy, Im scared to drive the car currently as the leak is major, I would like to know if it's easy to replace it? Has anyone done a DIY on this? Or any guru can help me with step by step guide in how and what to do in order for me to replace it? I am also looking for the water pump if Anyone has one for sals? I'm in Edmonton, ab

yeah don't drive it with a leak. You'll overheat and blow your HG.

As for doing the waterpump, if you know how to do the timing belt on RB's it's easy. If not, you'll have to get someone to do it for you or follow the FSM if you are mechanically inclined.

you can do it without taking off the timing belt, and just get a sharpie and mark on it so you know where to put the belt if it slips off thats how we did mine haha

that's great, i think i will do it with a help of my friend, he is mechanic, just want to know what are the steps to do it, open what 1st then what next, so i can explain it to him as he only familiar with GM cars.

the other challenge is that we going to do this in winter, -15 to be exact i think, so how long do u thing the operation will take since i do not have a garage?

Most water pumps are pretty generic your friend shouldn't have a problem. Just make sure you make your marks like gts-James said. Shouldn't take more then a few hours though this weekend would be prime it's so post to be warm +2 or something, thinking about doing mine on Sunday as wel. Good luck !

No you can't, it's better to take the belt off and reinstall it.

Look at all the bolts you have to loosen/tighten in PROPER sequence:

You should do your timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time. That leak has probably made all that stuff very dirty and suspect if its leakin intoward the block.
Get yourself a 100tho km or better yet a 200tho Km service kit. Will include all that you need plus more.

I woudln't trust his words. Do it again.

(he sure didn't do the waterpump)

Or you can gamble on the potential for your timing belt to skip and engine BOOM.
