  • RBambler build thread

Hey all, I'm new to forum and thought I would share my project. After riding in a friends stock skyline i decided i needed an RB powered car one day. About 6 months later I had an rb in my garage. It sat for about a year until i thought i would put it in a 37 ford i was building up. skip ahead one more year.....the 37 hadn't had much progress and my summer daily driver a 1961 amc rambler was starting to get tired with its all stock straight 6. After a few measurements and a couple beers, the decision was made too swap the rb in to the rambler, hence rbambler! The drive line will be very simple, the rb will be on megasquirt 2, ac and power steering aborted, cas gone, iac gone, stock coil packs aborted for the ford edis 6 system. Amongst other things as i go. As you can imagine the rb combo didn't just fit in there so some cutting was required. Anyway enough long wind, here's some pics and i look forward to the help with some of the stupid questions i will have as we get this thing running!

stock rambler the day my grandpa forwarded it to me

On Air bags with the roof painted and some pin stripping.

    the old motor

    the new!!

the giant hole I had to cut to make her fit in there.

starting to make the new panels

the above is the last couple weeks progress the rest is more recent.

    Intercooler mount

    the new rad was next

    radiator lower mount

Some pictures of the motor as it sits

    old rear end

    new rear end

also the custom coil cover i made. I'm not concerned about heat as the coil packs wont be under there, the edis system has a single pack that i will mount else were and just have spark plug wires running in the back of the cover.

i also tapped the cam covers to fit some stainless swedgeloc fittings....I hate rubber hose.

Megasquirt as it came to my house.

All soldered together and tested with the stim board

Next I made a new cross member to hold the new rear, since the car is a unibody I will be adding some gussets and fish plates to hold it all in there.

Also welded up new rear ladder bars

I LOVE shiny bits! A good friend was over about a week ago and I asked his input on how to mount the 36-1 trigger wheel (for the EDIS system) to the stock dampener/lower pulley assembly. After a brief discussion he took the the 2 pieces home with him and showed up with this the next day!

I also got the dash out so i could modify it for new gauges and prewiring.

lastly I fit up a new power booster mount and clutch resovoir mount.

I will be posting another thread about the coil covers. I am open to suggestions and will be feeling you guys out if anyone is interested in them then I will make a bunch up.

You my friend seem like a smart man! Unless you got a company to do this... The car will run and sound stunning once finished. This is a awesome and very unique car! Keep up the good work and welcome to the community!
Miss driving sooooo bad! Need to get a car on the road ASAP!

                        update....

I got the brake booster and clutch assembly all done

Dash is starting to come together, I got the gauges fit up and made a new piece to hold the tach and speedo.

dropped the tank, I will be making a new one, which will hold the new walboro 255 and have a return line for the fuel injection.

                        more updates soon.

hahaha thanks keith! It wasnt in that good of shape, my grandpa did a very amateur resto on it. I started to tub it out this week and will post pics soon. There is some super scabby "repair" work out back. I will post pics later this week. Good news is the Rbambler will be sporting a 12" inch tire this summer and hopefully it wont just be a burn out machine! haha.

Update.... I got a bit lately, the gauges are half wired. I modified the stock fuel rail to make the return line sexier. Also cut a bit further on the wheel tubs and made a new gas tank....

now somebody buy some coil covers so I can fund the build!!!! haha thanks guys
