  • rb20 running on 2 cylinders 4th and 6th

ok so im new here.... been on son240 for 3 years now... i hve a rb20 swapped into a s-chassis.... here is my problem.

ok first time problem happened i went threw a big puddle at fifty point in stoneycreek ontario. car lost all power and died... wouldnt start back up so i pulled #1 spark plug to check spark and when turning over it started right up, so i put the spark plug back in and everything ran great untill saturday.

saturday in welland it rained for 24hrs.... i started my car to go to work and it ran fine but as going down the road i got into third gear and it died again. so i check the spark plug fast and there is still spark but it didnt start right up again. i waited till after work to **** with it and when i got back i unplugged the maf and unplugged the o2 ... plugged both back in and it started with me holding the gas pedel to the floor. it ran fine for the 300 m back to my house and i parked it there for the night. when i went out in the morning it didnt run right and when i started pulling coil plugs to determine whats not firing only 4th and 6th cylinder would fire.
so im thinking its the ignitor. or wiring went bad somewhere... or maf? or timing?
im stuck has anyone had this problem? what has fixed it?

Coils are fooked. Rain, humidity --> coil, or plug wires (Harness on RB's)

        Hey man,

If the injectors are still ticking after the car is shut off that would be a a great place to start to track down your problems. First, I would check all your coils. If your both your coils and injectors arn't working properly then (from just reading this and not actually seeing the car) I would say it would most likely be the ECU. If your coils are good then it seems that it's an injector problem. Once again, these only get power from the ECU so it still seems that it could be the ECU giving you grief.

What caused all this in the first place could be a number of things. Again, just from reading this, it seems like the water had something to do with it. I would check the wiring and see if you have some chaffing or something... The water may have grounded it out and caused damage. Where is your ECU mounted?

Hope it helps, best of luck.

Water on CAS = failure. Injector timing (pull CAS off with ignition to 3 and turn CAS shaft to hear injectors click), coilpack firing are timed from looking at CAS.

If not CAS then ignition module, as from what I can remember of wiring diagram, CAS, ignition module are connected via wiring.

When ignition module fails, sometimes engine won't start or misses. Same with faulty CAS.

That fact that it's running on 2x cylinders says ignition module, as that controls the firing of coilpacks, charging of coilpacks.

On later model Skyline (series 2 R33, R34) they moved the firing part of ignition module to each coilpack, so each coilpack can be turned off via ECU with Consult.

ok guys, i have a good friend that is building 3 gtrs and all his stock parts i have at my will.... so i no the coils are good no matter what. i checked all of them and every single one is giving spark and nothing seems wrong there. the cas is very likely to have water damage due to the hood being cut and raised. i no it has something to do with water in something. just find it wierd that it drives fine then everything shuts off.... then i started it up again and ran fine till home, once shut down it ran on two cylinders and thats it. so right now im thinking...

            cas
            ecu
            wiring
            grounds

oh and ecu is mounted in proper place with wiring running threw firewall. but i also have my battery relocated too the trunk and the 2 gauge cable runs threw the passanger wheel well with nothing really protecting the whole it runs threw. few other things to note is .... the motor came out of ronnies old blue coupe he sold to some dumbass and he totalled it.... also since the swap (2 months ago) if i put my key in and turn it but dont start the car.... then take it out all my dash lighs stay on like its ready to turn over... only way to get them off is to turn the car over then removing the key... so wiring or the ecu must have a problem somewhere

also to anybody thinking coils again........... ALL COILS HAVE SPARK AND SHOW NO ABNORMAL SIGNS i also tried a new ignition module and no change. also i have three spare coils at my disposal and no change.
