  • Boost Controller Help

So I'm completely new to boost controllers and turbos and was just looking on some advice on what to look for in a boost controller. I have narrowed it down to three to pick between and would just like a professional opinion on which to get. I'm assuming everyone is going to say the AEM Tru-Boost because it's name brand, but I like the first one I'm gonna post the best because it has a built in timer too so I could rip out my old turbo timer and replace it with this timer/boost controller instead of having another box next to my timer. Also, with the AEM, would I need an a-pillar pod to put it in?

I'm leaning towards the controller/timer because then I could get rid of my timer and not have two boxes next to each other. But then again, with the AEM one, I could steering column mount it or on by the window on the pillar. But it's also twice the price of the cheaper one.

If you buy a engine oilcooler, oiltemp gauge you don't need a turbo timer. Turbo timer allows oil temp to reach a safe temperature before turning engine off to prevent coking inside turbo that can block oil galleries, starve turbo of oil. But if have engine oilcooler, oiltemp gauge you can see if oil temp is at a safe temperature on oiltemp gauge and turn engine off.

Here's some other options to look at from expensive to cheapish :-

I've looked at better quality ones already, and right now its just a budget issue. I'm hoping to spend under $200 for the controller and just install it myself. I just bought the car this year and want to do a tiny bit of performance mods and get the body/interior back in perfect shape. I am going to be getting a gizzmo next summer when I upgrade my turbo and get a power fc, but for now I just want a bit more power for a small fee. Would either of the cheaper controllers I was looking at be any good or should I stay clear of them?

About oil temp, as far as I know it varies depending on oil you run as some oils don't break down until very high oiltemps. Read this documentation as it should help to understand what oiltemp is ideal to shut it off at for the oil your running -

The UK's largest independent supplier of automotive oils, fluid and parts. We've products to suit any vehicle, from full blown Race / Track weapons, to Daily Drivers looking to save money. Plus FREE expert advice & recommendations - OPIE KNOW OILS

With intake, exhaust on RB20DET oiltemp can reach around 93 degrees Celcius? (10W40 oil) after a drive without engine oilcooler. Thermostat's on oilcooler kits don't start to open until 82-93 degrees Celcius (180-200 degrees Fahrenheit) which probably would match the oil your running. I would think 82-100 degrees Celcius to be safe (depending on oil you run). On racetrack oiltemps can reach around 100-120 degrees Celcius.

I would contact Opie and ask them as they are the oil experts.

Don't know the boost controller history / problems people have encountered with them. Sometimes they look good but have known faults (sometimes can be fixed) that can cause over boost, etc. Sometimes they lack over boost prevention features (like you would find on HKS boost controller). As long as they have adjustable gain, map sensor to help in preventing over boost, etc, they should work.
