  • timing belt wandering?

Wasnt sure how to put it, but im wondering what would cause a timing belt to slowly wander off the cam gears? The timing belt was under half the width it should of been, there was a very fine black powder everywhere under the timing belt cover. the one edge of the belt is perfectly flat while the other is slanted. I replaced the belt today because i thought the previous owner had put on a tiny tiny belt but now im thinking that the timing belt slowly walked forward on the gears and slowly shaved away over time. any ideas what causes this?

    Thanks

sounds like it wasnt installed correctly or something was moving like the tensioner if it wasnt replaced and had some play in it
    that allowed it to move
understeer -is when you go off the road and see the tree that kills you
oversteer-is when you go off the road backwards and dont see the tree that kills you

i was thinking something might be loose but everything felt nice and tight, tried tightening everything up before i put the new belt on, also replaced my p/s, alternator, and a/c belts. Not sure how long the old belt was on there for but i will definitely be checking to see if the belts moved forward atleast once a week from now on.

Has anyone else had this issue before and resolved it?

it is easy to have the spring on the tensioner slip behind it when installing it. I did it once. Same thing as you.

i didnt install the timing belt wrong, the last one (the one that was on the car when i bought it) was tiny, like less than 1/2" in width. when i took it off to replace it i noticed a fine black power (rubber dust from the belt shaving away slowly) and realized, it was the right belt on the car before but it was moving forward on the cam gears. I just replaced the belt yesterday, checked it today and it hasnt walked forward yet. not sure how long the old belt was on there for but im assuming the tensioner or idler is just worn a bit and needs replaced as well.

I really wouldnt hurt to replace everything in there if u can afford it. Get a 200k KM timing belt kit, comes with Water pump, belt, tensioner pulley , tensioner spring, tensioner bolt, idler pulley etc. Do it all and your good for 100k KM.
100k Km timing kit only comes with belt, tensioner pulley and spring. I think.

Where can i get one of these 200xxx kits (car has 158xxx on it) and how much is it going to cost for one? Car could use some new parts here and there so better off to get a more complete kit.

Anyone of sponsors(Rightdrive/Feast etc) or online(RawBrokerage etc).
If u go on Ztune.ca and check out there 200K timing kit, even tho they are closed, its a good list to by. I bought the kit from them when they were open.
