It's not the coils that are the problem, the red dust was from the rust on the tensioner bearings and it was blowing through the engine and landing on the coils before they blew apart.

so you recommend changing the tensioner when you do the timing belt?

If your going to replace one pully u may as well place both, and since ur in there and you have taken out the rad (u should presure test & flush it BTW) and taken off ur AC/PS/Alt Belt maybe worth a replace? and heck a water pump too!

speaking from my experince today when i did all the above, u may as well do EVERYTHING while u have the front of the motor apart, no sense say "i wish i would have changed that _____" when i did my T belt/Pullies

ok i plan to check the coils tomorow, but looking at the cover it looks like its gunna be a bitch to get out, do i just take off the timing belt cover, loosen all the screws holding the coil cover peice, and then slide it out, because its under all the piping and it looks to be connected to a couple parts even

I just had a look at my coils and I nkow there is a plate that keeps the tensioner away from where the coils are so there theoretically shouldn't be any dust, anyways. I was wondering because I found dust on coil 6. Would this be a concern or is this dust from before the tensioner was changed. Is this dust from something else? Would it be more likely to be on coils 1-3? Thanks

I have had a timing belt break on me in the past and this is the worst thing ever, Its terrible haveing bent valves and haveing to rebuild ur head. I had it lucky even, all i did was damage my head but it was still expensive... In my opinion never cheap out when it has to do with ur timeing belt..... if u havn't replaced it replace it and if ur going to replace it replace everything... some one ellse in has already mentioned replaceing everything well u have it all tore apart and that is the best idea ever..... U don't want to mess up ur engine like this its terrible.

Hey guys!!! Im new to the forum and I gotta thank you about the post for the red dust problem. That'll help me to avoid problems and I already ordered all the stuff needed to replace everything... I would probably change my coils as well. Does someone know about the RB20/RB25/RB26 Wasted Spark Remote Coil Pack Kit by driftworks??????? Is it worth money???? Is it good compared to the usual splitfire kit...

                          Thanks for your answers

                            Hey guys

I'm wondering how much all of these parts cost you?

I'm also taking it that this is for experienced mechanics. I wouldn't even know where to start looking let alone taking apart the pulley and getting to the coils etc....:hit_head:

                              $160 for tensioner bearings
                              $80 for timing belt

rough prices and then there is labour.

                                I wanna do it!

Is this something that a person with no mechanical training can chck?

I have my gts-t sitting in the garage and wouldn't mind checking this before I start driving it again.

What does it mean if I find this dust?
What then has to bee done?
                                Anyone know what it'll cost?

                                Thanks to anyone who replies.
