  • SAFC NEO or leave it be

So i am looking to get my car running a little better with my new upgrades for this coming summer and want to know if its worth buying a SAFC or just save up and buy an aftermarket ecu?

My car has the following mods:
    - Divorced downpipe
    - Cat delete
    - Veilside catback
    - Pod filter
    - Electronic boost controller (10psi)
    - Splitfire coilpacks

And a soon to come FMIC and BOV

    Thanks

I ran a NEO in my old GTSt and it worked fairly well. It is limited to correcting fuel/air only. It helped with running larger injectors and fuel pump as I could add corrections throughout the RPM range to keep my AFR's in check. If you are looking for anything more than that, then I would go piggyback (Emanage), or standalone.
If it were me, I would figure out what horsepower goal I was going for and then decide from there.

For this year i would like a healthy 300hp but i doubt ill hit that with the stock turbo. My goal is 450-500 in the end and then i will be happy with it and probably not do anything more to it from there but thats a couple years down the road when i can afford a full turbo kit.

Z32 / 300ZX ECU. Can modify Z32 / 300ZX ECU internally to plug into stock R33 loom (for series 1 and series 2 R33 RB25DET) and fit Nistune to make stock Z32 / 300ZX ECU retunable (adjust to mods when added to engine like injectors, fuelpump, Z32 MAF + Z32 plug, etc), similar to a aftermarket ECU.

SAFC plays with MAF voltage to make ECU select different load cells on ignition, fuelmap that have different ignition, fueling figures. Your limited to the max ignition timing, fueling figures on fuel, ignition maps. SAFC was designed to work with intake, catback exhaust mods and anything more than that requires a proper ECU (PowerFC ECU, etc) where ignition timing can be adjusted outside what's on stock maps. Also as far as I know, with SAFC you can't adjust startup, etc. SAFC was used with SITC (Super Ignition Timing Controller), which I think adjusted CAS? signal before PowerFC was produced.

Piggyback ECU changes signals from stock ECU and if stock ECU decides to pull ignition timing, add more fuel during tuning due to detecting knock, ECU tune won't be as good as with a standalone ECU.

Stock RB25 turbo on RB25DET is good for around 322rwhp with aggressive ECU tune (Link G4 ECU with MAP sensor, IAT sensor, etc). Average is around 295rwhp with safe tune with MAF sensor.

If fit a hybrid (some call it a high flow) stock RB25 turbo, can get roughly around 433hp (engine) or 369rwhp at 15psi with Link G4 ECU, etc -

Another LINK ECU tune.....this time RB25DET stock engine, 500(Subaru injectors), high flow turbo, intercooler, exhaust, airfilter and LINK G...

To most it would look stock but have more hp than stock engine.

So i dont suppose a mines tuned ecu would do me any good would it? I found one for a good price that was tuned for all the same mods as mine has but read on another forum that our fuel isnt good enough here. I always run shell v-power but apparently its not good enough. Can anyone verify this?

          Thanks

From what I've read on this forum and others previously, a Japanese tuned ECU won't be good here because they are usually tuned on 100 octane fuel which is readily available over there. If your goals are in the 450-500hp range, I would recommend going to a stand alone such as an Apexi Power-FC or Haltech Platinum Pro. The Power-FC is starting to become fairly old technology now and for a bit more you can upgrade to the Platinum Pro which I would recommend. Tons of great features and can be used on any R32 or R33 engine. Plus it has a built in MAP sensor so you can either use the MAF for tuning with lambda correction or you can switch your set-up to volumetric efficiency using the MAP sensor and toss the MAF and have less restriction on your intake. Plus the Haltech also has 2-step launch control, flat-shift, and tons of other great features. Highly recommend one.
