  • Rear Ball joint removal

I am attempting to remove/replace my rear ball joints on the ends of the tie rod ends. Can anyone give me a little advice on how to go about doing this, I've never done one myself before. Thanks

I know the part is the same as a 300zx never had to do one yet, i'm sure someone can chime in on a procedure

Not the same as 300zx, I have tried. Basically get your hands on a ball joint press and push them out with that.

I have the tie rod end off so the ball joint is sitting there by itself. Do I push towards the front of the car or the rear?

Really hey? I thought all the rear suspension crossed over with the 300 or 240. Learned something new

I work at an automotive shop and tried that route through one of our suppliers. He searched for a couple hours and finally found some for me. In the process he told me he used to own a JDM 240 and had to replace his hicas ball joints, that's how he knew they were different. He eventually found the right ones, can't remember what it crossed over with but they were about $175 a side.

I did them on my car, push them out to the rear, a little heat helps too. Check my project thread for pics on how I did it.

I did this on my old skyline. Not that bad of a job definitely not worth taking out the whole rear hub to press them out. Used a pitman arm puller. First take the snap ring on the back side off. Then press them out with a wrench/ snip turning the pitman arm puller.

To re install find a socket that will just fit around the edge of the ball joint and lube up the inner casing of the joint and whack her in a put the snap ring back on. Easy Took like 4 hours for both on the ground with jack stands.

On my car it was done the same as above post, but hit balljoint from other side with piece? of metal, hammer. Don't forget to remove the nipple on the side that's used to grease the balljoint. They supposedly aren't greased enough at factory hence why they fail and when they fail, take out the inner balljoint.

So it doesn't matter which side I hit it from?

Yes, it does matter, hit it from the front as it slides out to the rear.

U can borrow a ball joint press from auto value/part source, have to pay a deposit of like 300 bucks but u get it back, will b much easier, I tried pounding one of those out but no way, borrowed that press and was real easy , had to remove rear shock to get the press in there
