  • Coolant leak under intake manifold. need quick fix to get home!! :(

Just got a bad coolant leak under my intake mani. Need to get home from university. Are the lines underneath the intake mani only for heater, idle control/warm up ect.? Or are they part of the main main coolant circulation? I was thinking about blocking these lines off from the rest of the system as i still have to pack up my place and leave by saturday.

I only need to drive 7 hrs to get it home where i have a shop and can fix it right. I don't care if it will run rough on startup or anything, as long as it will run without damaging the engine.

if its at the back then you should be able to plug the hoses that go into the firewall. Those are for the heater core.

Don't bet the farm on my response though as i am not 100% that they can be plugged.

There are coolant lines that go to the oil cooler aswell. Unfortunatly there are a number of places coolant can be coming from.

Be careful where you block it, near the block it Tee's off and I beleive that coolant line goes to your turbo to cool it.

If ya need to block it do it near the firewall, which doesnt sound like its going to help you. Honestly if it was me, Id buy a crap load of coolant or if I had the tools, rip off the plenum so I can see what I doing.

block a coolant passage...nice...i wouldnt do that

fix it or park it...let it idle hot and use a light and find that hose...if its a hose...

Theres are crack or hole in a smaller aluminum pipe behind the waterpump that feeds the hose that goes underneath the mani to the back of the engine. Thinking about jb weld then rubber and hose clamp or two lol. (just to drive home where i have a shop) I would like to fix it right but id have to take off the manifold and buy a new part. I dont have the tools or time, just need to get it home.

            Thanks for the help.

Any friends with a truck and trailer? Try jb weld I guess dont want it to cost you your engine man.

Would totally replace it if i could buts its just a small elbow shaped delle in a terrible place. I can just touch it with the tips of my fingers.

And i do have a buddy with a trailer but it would be a 14 hr drive for him. Ill just patch it as well as i can and have a stressful ass drive home checking it all the time.

Found some old pics that might help you find the leak. Don't mind the numbers and lines.

                        Underneath the plenum

                        Below the plenum

I really advise not to drive it while leaking. It could crack your head or block just like that. Also the same coolant that cools the engine also cools the turbos, so they would be getting pretty hot as well and could fail. I know your not in the best situation, but it could risk the whole engine. Might be better to tow it. Maybe you can take the car to a near by shop and let them try fix it till saturday. Anyway best of luck man, been in the same shoes.

are you sure its not the intake gasket just above? There is no quick fix either way. Just park it or buy alot of coolent like Supraclean said.

found the leak, the picture helped. The pipe on the right side of the blue area is cracked. ended up trailering it

Good call on trailering it. Its not worth ruining your motor!
