  • Timing Service?

Hey guys i just had a question, im looking at getting my car tuned finally and i was talking to a localish shop which is willing to do it, shop comes highly recommended i talked to the guy over the phone, price was decent and he seemed to know his stuff. He asked if the car had the "timing service" done yet, i answered no because it hasnt had the timing belt changed since ive owned the car. Written on the timing belt is 110,000km, car has 135,000 on it. Shop wanted $600 to do the "timing service" and he wouldnt tune it until the "timing service" was done, i may have misunderstood him but i think he said he had to do it.

So far as i understand a timing belt change does not cost $600, and as im trying to get this tune done on the cheap i'd rather get it done locally myself. So my question is, is this "timing service" just a timing belt change or does he need to make a "timing service" related to the tune itself. I'm just a little confused about this, i'm not going to name the shop because they do come highly recommended and i do sorta trust them, but i am trying to get this done cheaper. Any info would be great.

The tensioner, idler bearings can drag when older, which could cause the CAS on front of exhaust cam to produce incorrect timing, which is what I think he is talking about. I know when CAS bearings fail, it can pull ignition timing by 1-2 degrees. Tuners usually change sparkplugs, fuelfilter, check CAS setting, etc before tuning.

Sometimes with timing belt change they don't change mounting bolts for idler, tensioner, don't change idler, tensioner bearings, don't change waterpump, cam, crank seals. Timing belt change is usually done every 110,000km or 60,000km or less if car is thrashed.

You would have to ask him what he is quoting you on.
Usually for a timing service we change the following, as per Nissan Japan guidelines:

      timing belt
      tensioner pulley
      tensioner spring
      idler pulley
      water pump
      upper & lower rad hoses
      thermostat
      rad cap

If it's just $600 for the labour to change all the above, that's a pretty good rate. It's usually a 6-8 hour job.
But ask him what he's actually quoting you on.

I'll get in contact with him, but by the sounds of it, its just a service thing i can do myself and as long as its done properly hes not going to have to redo it for the tune correct?

Yes. The cam, crank seals seem to be a new thing Nissan dealers have added to the cambelt kit they sell. Replacing them stops oil leaking onto cambelt, etc when engine has done higher km (above 110,000km).
