  • Oil in Intake Piping.

    Hey guys,

So my RB20det was running fairly well except that it was very heavy on fuel. I checked the intake piping a few days ago and noticed a good amount of oil in the intake piping and some in the intercooler. Not alot just enough to be worried. I decided and came to the conclussion that it was a seal on the turbo, so I swapped it out for a spare I had laying around. Everything went smooth and I found that the other turbo had some mean shaft play. So no problems there.

All in all I put everything back on with the new turbo (used but no shaft play). Now I have a boost leak (bad) but the oil problem seems to have gotten alot worse. Any advice would help.

If get excessive build up of pressure inside engine, turbo oilseal is usually the first seal to fail (weakest spot), but a off balance shaft can damage oilseal (shows engine has been thrashed + hot shutdown in the past or just age). Excessive fuel consumption is probably related to it.

Check that PCV valve isn't blocked on intake manifold (PCV valve is located on the intake manifold end of vacuum hose that goes from breather on intake camcover to intake manifold). To check PCV you remove spring clamp, vacuum hose from intake camcover, then remove PCV valve + hose as one part (unscrew PCV valve from intake manifold via spanner). Then blow down vacuum hose and see if get air out of PCV valve. If no air, PCV valve is blocked with oil deposits and needs to be cleaned or replaced. Compression test engine (to check for excessive blowby).

But it's normal to get a little bit of oil inside intake pipe infront of turbo. The PCV system vents into rubber intake pipe infront of turbo when under vacuum, under boost and would get oil deposits there. Catchcan with internal baffles that removes oil is one way to stop it.
