  • 92 GTS-T Sputtering at 3000Rpm

    Hi there fellow skyline owners.
I am new to the forum here so bare with me.
I recentely just bought a 1992 Gts-t, love the thing.
Just after i bought it, it has started to sputter, as well as a very high idle.
The sputtering starts around 3000RPM usually after it gets warmed up, sometimes it will let me get past 3300rpm, turbo will spool up and the car will run fine until it gets below 3000rpm again.
I am thinking fuel pump, fuel filter, coilpacks ? anyone have any ideas here?
    anything would be greatly appreciated.
    Here are the upgrades
as well as a video with the sputtering, sorry for the terrible quality, had to use some iphone app.

NEW WATERPUMP & TIMING BELT CHANGED as well as the idler & tensioner pulleys.
    - New sparkplugs
    - New Alternator
    - Yellow jackets coil pack
    - Autobanh88 Front mount intercooler
    - Greddy AirNX Intake
    - 3" exhaust : Top Speed Pro 1 Catback, ARC downpipe, Megan test pipe
    - SARD R2D2 BOV
    - Cusco brake master cylinder brace
    - Aluminum coil pack cover
    - Aluminum oil catch can
    - OBX aluminum Coolant resevoir
    - Nismo oil & rad cap
    - HellaHorns
    - VIBRANT black sillicone hoses, couplers, and engine lines
    thanks
    James

Have you tried cleaning the MAF? Start there, most of the time it's either a dirty mass airflow or bad coil packs. Wouldn't hurt to replace your fuel filter while you're in there.

I may be wrong but I'd rule the fuel pump out. I can understand if it sputtered at high rpm but low rpm.... Tough to say
I'd also check the MAF's, easy possible solution.
I'd check coil packs, I had a similar issue two years ago. It would have a slight missfire when cruising, of I gave it a bit more throttle it would smoothen out, and of off throttle a bit it would missfires again.
Check your grounds on your coil packs and go from there

Just re soldered and cleaned the MAF sensor, first start up it it idled at 1000rpm which it has never done before, usually goes straight to 2000rpm, got to the end of my street and it shot back up to 2000rpm, could these mean i need a new MAF sensor?
And about the coil packs, buddy i bought it off said it came with new yellow jacket coil pack.. hmm?

No engine light coming on, but my buddy who had the car before me said it wasnt throwing any codes.
Would a gtr maf sensor work as well?

If you noticed a good difference just cleaning and re soldering rhe MAF, id assume it needs to be fresh'nd up and replace the sensor and do what you can to make sure all the connections are clean.
I'd open up the cool cover and inspect from there. Make sure the coils are clean and change the spark plug while your in there. I'm super lazy when it comes to little things, I swapped my spark plugs recently when I should have done them last year. Car runs smoother and fuel economy is better. Prob could have Dave's a lot of $ in fuel as I drive t car daily.

i just got a 1990 gtst and its doing this same sort of thing. its almost like a random misfire and builds boost at a rest with the clutch in or in neutral when missing. also wondering if the gtr maf will work i can swap it with my other car

I was having this problem with my GTR. Im in the same stage as you. Trying things out to see what fixes it... Probably going to pick up new MAFS and see how it works after that. Let me know if you find your problem.

Its throwing into "Limp Mode" did a little research and this is what I found... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvayihZ1FAo&feature=plcp .. Apparently its common and most of the time its the MAF either being dirty or the connectors needing to be replaced.
