  • Rb20det knock readings

Hey i have an apexi safc2 hooked up and is showing my knock. I noticed in different temperatures the knock reading is different. I left work at 7am and it was 15 degrees out and on the way home i hd a knock reading of 0 the whole way home. Later around 11am it was 25 degrees and i got a reading of 37. What im wondering is is this normal for higher temps to cause more knock?

Could be that the heat range on sparkplugs is too hot and when cylinder temps rise due to higher intake temps, lean A/F ratio (could be SAFC tune) = higher knock count. Pull sparkplugs and read the tips and fit new sparkplugs with correct heatrange if necessary, adjust SAFC tune to suit.

How to read spark plug tips -

PFR5A-11 (hot heat range) is stock sparkplug and PFR6A-11 (gapped down to 0.8mm and is colder) is what is used with intake, exhaust mods (leaner A/F ratio = higher cylinder temps).

    Sparkplug heat range -

Also clean inside (oil deposits), outside of intercooler (dirt). Another trick is to wrap the intake pipes from turbo to intake plenum with heat reflective tape (air gets reheated when going from intercooler to intake plenum without heat reflective tape).
