  • R32 Sputter/ Limp mode? Still chasing the problem..

As some of you may know from my other topics my skyline has had a sputter problem.
I and many other thought it was the MAF. Bought a gts maf off of ebay, didnt solve anything.
im starting to think its going into limp mode. it ONLY runs shitty/sputters/limp mode when the motor is warm. It will take a good 10-15 minutes before it will start to run like that and it will stay till it is cooled off. I dont have a temperature guage setup but it does seem to run hot, as well as the Cat light flashing when WOT. When in limp mode it runs extremely rich, where you can smell unburnt fuel, a bit of black smoke as well as my buddies seen a blue flame pop out when driving. I seen another fellow gtr member that had the same limp mode issue and it ended up being one of his maf harness ground wire being corroded. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks in advance, and heres a video of the problem.(Go to the end there is a clip with the hood open)
    Plugs are fine.
    Has New yellowjacket coilpacks
    Adjusted the tps
    Maf sensor is okay.

Limp mode is when you can't access Consult and happens when EPROM chip is dislodged from circuit board in side ECU.

MAF revlimiter (when not connected) is around 2500rpm, maybe might reach 3000rpm, safety revlimiter is around 5000rpm when there's no speed signal to ECU and I think when knock sensors fail.

One thing I noticed in videoclip, what looks like a clamp on airfilter. Check the airfilter clamp, as if there's a leak between airfilter, airfilter adaptor it can make the AFM max out and hit boost cut limiter earlier than it should (around 4000rpm). Apexi or similar type of airfilter that bolts on would be better. Easy to spot if have Nistune, as can see MAF voltage max out. It would make sense and fit your cars symptoms, as ECU would be selecting richer part of fuel map.

It doesn't hurt to check MAF wiring, it's common for wiring to fall out of AFM plug (if pull on wiring, not the plug when unplugging MAF), ECU plug when pull ECU out. Sometimes ECU plug is put in on an angle and tightened down which warps the plug. Also wiring to and from ECU can be damaged.

At times it does it at 4000rpm and others around the 3000rpm range.. im so lost

You would be guessing if can't see what's happening on ECU side. You need access to Consult software or Nistune tuning software + Consult cable. Use digital gauge feature and select MAF voltage, etc for gauges. When reving engine, looking at MAF voltage, that should tell you straight away if it's the cause. With Nistune tuning software you can datalog sensors, which makes it easier to see.

Only other thing I think it could be is ECU is in diagnostic mode, not run mode (screw on side of ECU is not set correctly), which can flash cat light on dash (It's a engine check light as well as cat overheat light).

So ill have to get the ecu codes read? can i use a obd1 code scanner or do i need the nistune software.

Nissan's Consult (handheld diagnostic computer) with correct cartridge (different cartridges for different models of car, sometimes they don't have the cartridge for your car) Nistune tuning software (probably would have to buy Nistune, but don't need to install Nistune board, or install Nistune board and use stock maps).

There used to be Conzult + consult cable, but not sure if they are around anymore.
