  • What Brand Of Coilover Does Everybody Run??

I have a set of Cuscos in my car and the rear are all destroyed gonna buy a new set i want to buy another set of cusco's but there the most expensive ones i have seen for a HCR32.
Anybody recommend other brands and which brands are crap??

I have Tein Comfort Sport coilovers, came with the car. Total crap in my opinion, way too mushy. They are good for daily driving and give you a reasonable amount of height adjustment, just way too soft for track use.

JIC magic here. Definitely would not suggest for daily driving, they are very stiff. Exactly what i am looking for though

Custom setup on my car, designed to improve grip, handling, acceleration, braking.

Without testing current handling, knowing specs of setup on car, etc, it's virtually impossible to tell you what would work. You need a suspension specialist who deals with racecars to work it out for you. You tell him what you want car to do and he builds it to suit.

Parts used on shock is more important than brand and gives different result's depending on what you use. But brand can matter if the metal used on shock, etc is sub quality and car is lowered too much, where they could fail. Some setups will have different parts hence the ride comfort, handling, etc problems. What I mean by that is, for example, sometimes people put wrong springs with wrong car, setup and complain about handling. If put correct spring with correct setup, car, it wouldn't happen.

Things to look at are -

Monotube shock (bigger diameter tube + bigger valving = softer ride, better damping)

Valving (stock valving as used by OEM, sports valving, etc and depends on use of car, spring rates, etc)

Tophat design (bolts to chassis and pillowball is harsher when hitting potholes and get more NVH, but gives better steering response when turning left to right, right to left, better handling. Rubber is softer and the opposite)

Bump stop design (some use a piece of thick metal for race setup or rubber bump stops for street use, which are known as a secondary spring and feels softer when suspension contract's when hitting pot holes)

Lower mount (pillowball?, nolathane or rubber bush, again will affect ride comfort, NVH, steering response, handling, etc)

Spring rate (this is worked out via formula and it depends on car it is fitted to, as setups are different. It can be that cars suspension design is different, fwd, rwd, 4wd, etc, hence it varies)

Sometimes bad handling is due to worn out end links on end of stock swaybars (if bushes are squished or cracked, they have had it). Replacing swaybar bushes with new or stronger bushes helps to reduce body roll by alot or upgrading swaybars helps to reduce bodyroll more on racetrack and matches above setup (formula is used and formula requires info from a shock, spring dyno's).

Not trying to be a ****, but fyi megan and k sport are some of the cheapest coilovers made for our cars. With that being said, PBM, HSD, Stance, etc all make cheap/ entry level coilovers for our cars. I've heard lots of good things about PBM and meister/ zeta coilovers and they're pretty affordable.

To the OP, I had zeal coils for a bit but the fronts were both blown (don't buy used coils, some members are dishonest) and they were a really comfortable ride, although they didn't improve the handling as much as I would have liked.

A friend of mine has HKS hypermax on his STI and they make the car handle FANTASTICALLY. The car also has the worst ride out of any vehicle I've ever driven in because of how unreasonably stiff it is.
Looking for cheap parts? supguyex (Jon) is parting out his car. Good prices, good guy.

Stance makes a pretty good quality product for 1500$ and they go low as low as you'll need with damper adjustment. Ian Fournier is running them in his car, formula D, and thats like some of the most harsh beating a car gets, and they come with a 2 year warranty, but i acctually ended up getting some BC Racing for mine, ive never ever hear 1 bad thing about that company no matter what lever of quality they were, unfortunatly i havnt gotten to drive my sedan since i bought since its pieces so i cant say how the custom 12/10 kg spring rate feels, or if on full soft its fine for DD. and i was going to get PBM as well but they just wouldnt go as low as i'd like a buddy of mine bought a set and they sent the wrong ones, ( rwd instead of awd) and took 2-3 months before he recieved the proper parts.

anyways good luck. and if your scared of getting stiff for daily... well id say just ignore it and enjoy the better handling. unless your very picky and like to just cruise drinking coffee or something ahaha. even on my old tein's super street it was aweful having passengers with coffee kuz it is just too bouncy even with them being 6/6 kg.

That sti bounces so much its funny lol. But very very responsive. I've never felt comparable steering control in any other car
