  • Stagea NEO auto to GTS RWD manual conversion questions

Ok I have just read about 30 pages of conversion stuff which all seemed to relate to swapping GT-R/GTS-4 gear into a stagea...

BUT I haven't found anything about making it two wheel drive, and whether the ecu will barf without 4 driving wheels (without traction control sensors as well)

My ecu is a JECS model 0V802 if anyone is familiar with it, I plan to get it nistune'd if that makes any difference?

I know I have the option of getting some r33 motorset, using the loom+ecu from that, and selling the block

Someone must have done this before, or am I crazy for getting a NEO? haha

So, you want to keep the auto but ditch the 4wd, is that correct?

Simple, 300zx slushbox, sell the AWD tranny to me (lol). The ECU shouldn't be able to tell the difference if the trannys are the same model and the ATESSA light will always be on but that shouldn't interfere with the operation of the tranny. Really all you do is pull the fuse and remove the pump, resevior and lines.

No I want to get an fs5r30a behind it with 1 driveshaft... and the car isn't a stagea just the running gear, harness, ecu, diff etc

If someone has the rb25 5spd bellhousing they'd like to sell me that would speed things up

Can earth out wires to those devices, so engine ECU thinks nothing is wrong. Similar way you earth out the cat sensor to turn cat overheat light on dash off.

Link or ViPEC ECU is best with ROSS crank trigger setup. R34 NEO Hitachi CAS (R33 and R32 use Mitsubishi CAS) needs to be upgraded to crank trigger setup for more accurate base ignition timing. Loose cambelt is known to cause damage from CAS shaft to front of exhaust cam joint on R34 NEO.

                ROSS crank trigger kit -

I was planning to get nistune installed as I already have a license, but Ross does make interesting stuff, will have to look into that external oil pump, might be cheaper than cromoly gearsets for the stocker

I don't however have powersteering, I manualized the rack

Any recommendations on the timing belt then, should I opt for a greedy or tomei?

With cambelts, look at tooth design (something I learnt on my car when trying different brand cambelt which created weird noise due to wrong tooth design), as it needs to match the stock camgears. I use stock cambelt, as teeth shape matches stock camgears. Aftemarket cambelts should match aftermarket camgears of the same brand (Greedy cambelt, Greedy camgears, Tomei cambelt, Tomei camgears). Using wrong teeth design can result in excessive wear of camgears, cambelt and results in cambelt failure.

I know Gates makes a strengthened cambelt (sell cambelt kits), but haven't compared the teeth design compared to stock cambelt -

I heard aftermarket cam gears disable the valve timing thing? Right now that's something I'd like to keep

Some use adjustable cam gear on exhaust cam only.
